Your National ID card photo: what matters
The Indonesian National ID card, known as the e-KTP (Kartu Tanda Penduduk elektronik), is issued by Dukcapil (the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration). The portrait that appears on your card must follow a precise official standard, and understanding that standard helps you arrive prepared and confident for your registration.
Here is the most important thing to know: the e-KTP photo is captured on-site during in-person biometric registration at the Dukcapil office, alongside your fingerprints and iris scan. You cannot bring a self-made photo to be printed on the card. There is also a uniquely Indonesian convention tied to your year of birth: the background colour is RED for people born in an even-numbered year and BLUE for an odd-numbered year. This is why two family members can hold cards with different background colours and both be perfectly valid.
The official portrait specification used for the red-background standard is:
- Size: 30x40 mm (354x472 px)
- Background: solid red (#FF0000) for even birth years
- Face height: the face must fill 50-65% of the frame height
- Expression: neutral, with the mouth closed
- Glasses: allowed only if the eyes are fully visible, with no glare and no tinted lenses
- Headwear: not permitted, except for religious head covering that does not hide the face
- Recency: the captured image must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
Common reasons e-KTP photos are rejected in Indonesia:
- Wrong background colour for the birth year (red used for an odd year, or blue for an even year)
- A religious head covering, fringe, or eyeglass frame partly obscuring the eyes or face outline
- Smiling or an open mouth instead of the required neutral expression
- Glare or reflections on the lenses that hide the eyes during on-site capture
Because the e-KTP image is taken digitally at the office, a downloaded or self-made photo is generally not accepted for submission.
