A document photo is a headache of its own

A Bosnia and Herzegovina National ID card photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your National ID card photo: what matters

The National ID card of Bosnia and Herzegovina (licna karta / osobna iskaznica) is issued through the centralized IDDEEA agency, which administers the country's unified biometric identity system. The facial image follows the same ICAO 9303 standard used for the Bosnian biometric passport: a 35x45 mm portrait against a plain white background. Getting this standard exactly right matters, because the same image becomes the official record on your card.

The most important fact about the Bosnian ID card is unusual and often misunderstood: you cannot submit a self-made photo. Under the IDDEEA enrolment process, your facial image is captured digitally on-site at the municipal office (or by a certified photographer with secure upload into the system) at the moment you provide your fingerprints and signature. This biometric capture binds the photo to your live identity check, so a picture downloaded from your phone or printed at home is generally not accepted for the application itself. The standard, however, is fixed and predictable.

  • Size: 35x45 mm (413x531 px at print resolution)
  • Background: plain white (#FFFFFF), evenly lit, no shadows
  • Face size: head fills roughly 70-80% of the frame height
  • Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed
  • Glasses: allowed only if eyes are fully visible with no glare or tint
  • Headwear: none, except plain head covering worn for religious reasons
  • Recency: the captured image must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
  • Common reasons photos are rejected in Bosnia and Herzegovina:
  • Submitting a home-made or studio print instead of completing the mandatory on-site biometric capture
  • A background that is off-white, grey or shadowed rather than uniform white
  • Tinted lenses or reflections hiding the eyes, which the IDDEEA system reads for the biometric template
  • A non-neutral expression, head tilt, or hair covering the face outline

Use this tool to generate a perfectly standard-compliant 35x45 mm reference image from your own photo. It is cropped and formatted automatically to the exact official specification, so you can see precisely how a compliant portrait must look before your appointment, brief a photographer, or keep it for other identity purposes. We are transparent about the rules: because Bosnia and Herzegovina requires the ID card photo to be captured digitally on-site, we do not promise that a self-supplied image will be accepted for the application. Treat this as your expert preparation step, not a substitute for the IDDEEA enrolment.

Common questions about Bosnia and Herzegovina National ID card photos

Can I submit my own photo for a Bosnian ID card?
Generally no. The IDDEEA system captures your facial image digitally on-site during biometric enrolment, so a home-made or downloaded photo is not accepted for the application itself.
What size is the Bosnia and Herzegovina ID card photo?
It follows the ICAO standard of 35x45 mm (about 413x531 px), the same format used for the Bosnian biometric passport.
What background colour is required?
A plain, evenly lit white background (#FFFFFF) with no shadows, patterns or objects behind the head.
Can I wear glasses in the photo?
Only if your eyes are fully visible with no glare or tinted lenses. Removing glasses is the safest option for the biometric capture.
Is headwear allowed?
Hats and fashion accessories are not allowed. A plain head covering worn for religious reasons is accepted, provided the full face from chin to forehead stays visible.
Then what is this tool useful for?
It produces an exact 35x45 mm standard-compliant reference image, so you can see how a compliant portrait must look, prepare for your IDDEEA appointment, or brief a certified photographer.
