Your National ID card photo: what matters
Getting your Bangladesh National ID (NID, Smart Card) photo right matters because this credential, issued by the Bangladesh Election Commission, follows the international ICAO white-background portrait convention. The goal is a clean, neutral, standard-compliant headshot — and this page shows you exactly what that looks like so there are no surprises on the day.
Here is the most important thing to understand about the NID, and what makes it different from a passport photo you order online: the portrait is captured live on-site during your NID registration or biometric enrolment — it is not self-supplied. When you attend your appointment at the Election Commission office (or upazila registration centre), an official takes your photograph together with your fingerprints and iris scan. Because there is no published self-submission photo dimension standard for the NID, the figures below are inferred from Bangladesh's national ICAO and white-background convention — useful for preparation, not for upload.
A compliant reference image follows these specifications:
- Size: 45x55 mm (1063x1299 px)
- Background: plain pure white (#FFFFFF), evenly lit, no shadows
- Face size: the head fills roughly 70-80% of the frame height
- Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed
- Glasses: not allowed — remove all eyewear
- Headwear: none, except worn daily for religious reasons (the full face must remain visible)
- Recency: reflects your current appearance, taken within the last 6 months
Common reasons photos are rejected in Bangladesh:
- Wearing glasses or tinted lenses that cause glare or hide the eyes
- A non-white or shadowed background instead of the required pure white
- Smiling or an open mouth — the standard requires a neutral expression
- Headwear that covers the hairline, forehead or jaw, obscuring facial features
