Your National ID card photo: what matters
Getting your Ghana Card photo right means meeting the biometric standard set by the National Identification Authority (NIA), the body responsible for issuing the national identity card. Here is the most important thing to understand about the Ghana Card, and what makes it different from many other documents: you do not submit a self-made photo. The NIA captures your facial image and biometrics live, on-site, at an accredited registration centre during enrolment. A photographer or downloaded JPEG is not handed over at the counter, because the authority records the picture digitally itself to bind it securely to your fingerprints and personal data. The published 35x45 mm values simply mirror the national biometric standard so you understand the framing the camera operator will aim for.
The reference standard for a compliant Ghana Card image:

- Background: plain white (#FFFFFF), evenly lit
- Face height: fills 70-80% of the frame
- Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed
- Glasses: not permitted
- Headwear: none, except plain religious head covering that leaves the full face visible
- Recency: reflects your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
Common reasons photos are rejected in Ghana:
- Arriving expecting to use a self-supplied print or phone photo instead of the mandatory on-site live capture
- Wearing glasses or tinted lenses that obscure or reflect over the eyes during capture
- A head wrap, cap, or wig that covers the hairline, forehead, or jaw and breaks the 70-80% face framing
- Smiling, an open mouth, or a tilted head that fails the neutral, front-facing biometric requirement
