Did you know? Ghana
In 2024 Ghana's currency, the cedi, was the worst-performing currency on Earth — yet just one year later, in 2025, it staged a stunning reversal to become the single best-performing currency in the world, appreciating roughly 32%. The cedi itself carries deep history: its name comes from the Akan word for the cowrie shell, the small Indian Ocean seashells that served as money across the Gold Coast until 1901. In 2007 the note had grown so weak that the government simply lopped four zeros off everything overnight — 10,000 old cedis became one new cedi.
- Currency The cedi is named after the cowrie shell — small seashells from the Indian Ocean that circulated as money across what is now Ghana right up until 1901.
- Redenomination In July 2007 Ghana erased four zeros from its money in a single stroke, turning 10,000 old cedis into one new cedi after the largest banknote had shrunk to just about two US dollars.
- Currency swing After being branded the world's worst-performing currency through 2024, the cedi flipped to become the planet's best-performing currency in 2025, gaining around 32% against the dollar.
- Passport Ghana's 2025-era biometric e-passport packs more than 170 security features, meets ICAO 2030 standards, and is built to clear automated e-gates at modern borders.
- Passport rank On the Henley Passport Index for 2025, the Ghanaian passport ranked 71st worldwide, opening 67 destinations to its holders visa-free or with visa on arrival.
- Citizenship Ghana's Right of Abode law lets people of African descent enter without a visa, live permanently, and work without a permit — a legal pathway rooted in its Pan-African vision.
- Diaspora During the 2019 'Year of Return,' Ghana granted citizenship to over 200 members of the African diaspora and drew hundreds of thousands of visitors retracing their ancestral roots.
- Independence On 6 March 1957 Ghana became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to win independence from European colonial rule, shedding its old name, the Gold Coast.
- World record Lake Volta, formed behind the Akosombo Dam, is the largest reservoir on Earth by surface area, flooding 8,502 square kilometres of the country.
