Your Passport photo: what matters
An Indonesian passport (paspor or e-paspor) photo must meet the strict biometric standard set by the Directorate General of Immigration (Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi) under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Getting the framing, background and expression exactly right is what separates an accepted application from a rejected one - and the rules are more specific than most applicants expect.
The most important thing to understand about Indonesia is the process itself: the passport photo and biometrics (fingerprints, signature, facial scan) are captured live at the immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) during your scheduled appointment. You do not bring a printed photo to submit. The other peculiarity is the background colour: the Indonesian convention is a solid red background (#FF0000) - unusually, applicants born in even-numbered years have traditionally used red, while some birth years use blue. The printed studio convention is 4x6 cm, and the head (crown to chin) must fill 50-60% of the frame height.
The exact technical requirements are:
- Size: 40x60 mm (472x709 px), printed convention 4x6 cm
- Background: solid red, #FF0000, evenly lit with no shadows
- Face size: head fills 50-60% of the frame height (crown to chin)
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera
- Glasses: not allowed - remove all eyewear
- Headwear: none, except religious head covering that does not obscure the face
- Recency: must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
Common reasons photos are rejected in Indonesia:
- Wrong background - using blue, white or grey instead of the required red
- Wearing glasses, or glare and reflections from lenses
- Smiling or an open mouth instead of a neutral, closed-mouth expression
- Head too small or too large, falling outside the 50-60% frame ratio
