Kyrgyzstan Passport Photo: Exact GRS Biometric Standard

Everything you need to know about the official Kyrgyzstan biometric passport photo standard — size, background and the rules that decide whether your application moves forward.

Important — please read first

This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Kyrgyzstan does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.

A document photo is a headache of its own

A Kyrgyzstan Passport photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Passport photo: what matters

Getting a compliant Kyrgyzstan passport photo means meeting the exact biometric standard set by the State Registration Service (GRS / ГРС), the authority that issues the country's biometric passport (the 2017+ ID-card-era model, refreshed for 2025). The photo is the single most scrutinised element of your file, because it feeds directly into the chip and the facial-recognition database — so the framing, lighting and proportions have to be precise.

Here is the most important Kyrgyzstan-specific point: for the modern biometric passport, your biometrics — the photograph and fingerprints — are captured digitally on-site at a TSON (ЦОН) service centre during your appointment. The operator photographs you live against a controlled background, which means a downloaded or self-printed photo is generally not accepted for submission. This differs from the older printed passport era, where commercial photo studios produced a 40×60 mm (4×6 cm) print on a white background with roughly a 38 mm head height. Knowing this in advance saves you a wasted trip.

The official photo specification is:

  • Size: 40×60 mm (472×709 px)
  • Background: plain white (#FFFFFF), evenly lit, no shadows
  • Face height: the face fills 62–80% of the frame height
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight at the camera
  • Glasses: not allowed
  • Headwear: forbidden (no hats, caps or decorative coverings)
  • Recency: taken within the last 6 months and reflecting your current appearance
  • Common reasons photos are rejected in Kyrgyzstan:
  • Bringing a self-made photo — the biometric passport requires live on-site capture at TSON, so an external print is refused outright
  • Wearing glasses — even clear lenses cause glare and reflections that fail the biometric check
  • A grey, cream or textured background instead of pure even white
  • Smiling or an open mouth, head tilted, or hair covering the eyes or face outline

You can still prepare smartly. Our tool automatically crops and formats your own picture to the exact 40×60 mm GRS standard, so you get a perfectly compliant reference image — ideal for seeing precisely how a compliant photo must look, checking your appearance and grooming before the appointment, or for visa and other documents that do accept self-supplied photos. To be fully transparent: for the Kyrgyz biometric passport itself, the photo must be captured at the office, so we cannot promise this image will be accepted for that submission. Use it to walk into your TSON appointment knowing exactly what a compliant result looks like.

Common questions about Kyrgyzstan Passport photos

Can I use a self-made photo for a Kyrgyzstan biometric passport?
Generally no. The modern biometric passport requires your photo and fingerprints to be captured digitally on-site at a TSON service centre during your appointment, so a downloaded or self-printed photo is not accepted for that submission.
What size is a Kyrgyzstan passport photo?
The standard format is 40×60 mm (4×6 cm), equivalent to 472×709 px, on a plain white background. The face should fill 62–80% of the frame height.
Who issues the Kyrgyzstan biometric passport?
The State Registration Service (GRS / ГРС) issues the biometric passport. Biometric enrolment, including the photo, takes place at TSON (ЦОН) service centres.
Are glasses allowed in a Kyrgyzstan passport photo?
No. Glasses are not permitted, because lenses cause glare and reflections that interfere with the biometric facial-recognition capture.
What background colour is required?
A plain, evenly lit white background (#FFFFFF) with no shadows, patterns or texture. Grey, cream or coloured backgrounds are rejected.
Then how is your tool useful for me?
It instantly formats your own picture to the exact 40×60 mm GRS standard so you can see precisely what a compliant photo looks like, prepare for your TSON appointment, or use it for other documents that do accept self-supplied photos.
