North Macedonia Passport Photo: Exact ICAO-Standard Reference Image
Prepare a perfectly compliant 35x45 mm reference photo for your North Macedonia biometric passport and understand exactly how the MVR capture process works before your appointment.
This photo must be taken by an accredited service
For this document, North Macedonia does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.
This photo is captured on site — but we can make your North Macedonia photos online:
A document photo is a headache of its own
A North Macedonia Passport photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.
It gets rejected
Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.
Expensive and slow
A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.
Confusing requirements
Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.
Redo it all over
Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.
«Below are the exact requirements from the official source, so you arrive at your appointment prepared.»

We remove the background and clutter, set the framing and lighting — keeping your face without «beautifying».
Your face stays yours — we do not change features, only the background, lighting and framing.
Your Passport photo: what matters
Getting your North Macedonia passport photo right means matching the strict ICAO biometric standard enforced by the Ministry of Interior (MVR / Министерство за внатрешни работи). Since 2007, North Macedonia has issued biometric passports, and the photographic specification follows international travel-document rules: a 35x45 mm portrait with a neutral, front-facing pose and a plain, light background.
There is one crucial peculiarity that sets this document apart. For passports applied for in person, the MVR captures your photograph and biometric data live, on-site at the counter. The officer photographs you with the agency's own equipment, so a self-supplied or downloaded photo is generally not used for the application itself. The official MK guidance still defines the exact look the system expects: a plain white or light gray background, a head measuring roughly 34.5 mm from chin to crown, and about a 3 mm margin above the head. Knowing this standard in advance lets you arrive groomed and ready, with no surprises at the appointment.
- Size: 35x45 mm (827x1063 px at print resolution)
- Background: plain light gray (#F0F0F0) or white, evenly lit, no shadows
- Face size: head fills roughly 70-80% of the frame height (about 34.5 mm chin-to-crown)
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible
- Glasses: not allowed - remove all eyewear
- Headwear: none, except worn daily for religious reasons (face fully visible)
- Freshness: taken within the last 6 months and resembling your current appearance
- Common reasons photos are rejected in North Macedonia:
- Background that is too dark, patterned, or colored instead of plain white or light gray
- Wearing glasses, or reflections and frame glare obscuring the eyes
- Non-neutral expression - smiling, an open mouth, or visible teeth
- Incorrect head proportions or tilt, so the chin-to-crown size falls outside the standard
Because the MVR records your biometrics digitally at the office, you generally cannot submit a homemade photo for a North Macedonian passport - on-site capture is mandatory. What our tool does is automatically crop and format your own picture to the exact 35x45 mm MK standard, giving you a reliable reference image. Use it to see precisely how a compliant photo must look, to prepare your hair and clothing for the appointment, or for other documents and personal needs. Honest expectation: this is preparation, not a guaranteed submission file - and that transparency is exactly what protects you from a wasted trip.
