North Macedonia National ID Card (Licna Karta) Photo: Exact Biometric Standard
Everything you need to know about the North Macedonian ID card photo — the unified MVR biometric standard, the exact 35x45 mm spec, and why the picture is captured on-site.
This photo must be taken by an accredited service
For this document, North Macedonia does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.

Your National ID card photo: what matters
The North Macedonian national ID card (licna karta) is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVR — Ministerstvo za vnatresni raboti) and carries a biometric facial image that must meet the same unified standard as the Macedonian biometric passport. Getting that image right means a smooth, single-visit application — and understanding the standard in advance is the surest way to avoid a wasted appointment.
Here is the most important peculiarity, and it surprises many applicants: for the licna karta the photo is captured live on-site at the MVR office when you apply. The clerk takes the digital image directly, so a downloaded or self-printed photo is generally not submitted for this document. The unified biometric standard is strict — the captured face image must measure roughly 34.5 mm of head height within a 35x45 mm frame, against a white or light-gray background, which is why the lighting and seating at the counter are tightly controlled.
The official specification MVR works to:
- Size: 35x45 mm (827x1063 px at print resolution)
- Head height: face fills roughly 70-80% of the frame (about 34.5 mm head)
- Background: plain white or light gray (reference value #F0F0F0), even and shadow-free
- Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed, looking straight at the camera
- Glasses: not allowed (removed for capture unless medically required)
- Headwear: none, except for genuine religious or medical reasons, and the full face must stay visible
- Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
- Common reasons photos are rejected in North Macedonia:
- Wearing glasses during capture — reflections or frames obscuring the eyes are refused under the biometric standard
- A non-neutral expression — smiling, open mouth or raised eyebrows break the facial-template match
- Hair falling across the eyes or face edges, reducing the measurable head area
- Headwear worn without a religious or medical basis, or covering part of the face outline
Because the licna karta photo is taken digitally at the counter, no self-made file is accepted for the actual submission. What you can do is prepare: use our service to turn your own picture into a perfectly standard-compliant reference image, cropped automatically to the exact 35x45 mm MVR layout. It shows you precisely how a compliant photo should look — correct framing, neutral pose, no glasses — so you arrive at your appointment knowing what the camera expects, and you can use the result freely for other purposes.
