Colombia Passport Photo: The Exact Cancillería Standard Made Simple
Learn the precise Colombian passport photo rules set by the Cancillería — 4x5 cm, 27 mm head length, white background — and prepare a fully compliant reference image.
This photo must be taken by an accredited service
For this document, Colombia does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.
This photo is captured on site — but we can make your Colombia photos online:
A document photo is a headache of its own
A Colombia Passport photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.
It gets rejected
Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.
Expensive and slow
A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.
Confusing requirements
Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.
Redo it all over
Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.
«Below are the exact requirements from the official source, so you arrive at your appointment prepared.»
Ordinary photo → ready for submission
We remove the background and clutter, set the framing and lighting — keeping your face without «beautifying».
Your face stays yours — we do not change features, only the background, lighting and framing.
Your Passport photo: what matters
A Colombian passport photo must follow the technical standard published by the Cancillería de Colombia (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores). The rules are unusually precise: a 40x50 mm (4x5 cm) image with a measured head length of 27 mm, a 9 mm top margin above the head, and the eyes positioned 24-34 mm from the bottom edge. Getting these millimetre measurements right is the difference between a smooth appointment and a rejected application.
Colombia has one genuinely unusual rule that surprises most applicants: the background is normally pure white (#FFFFFF), but a blue background is permitted only for people with white, grey or very sparse hair, so the head stays clearly distinguishable from the backdrop. This is the opposite of most countries, which insist on a single fixed colour. Clothing should be dark, both shoulders must be visible and squared to the camera, and hats, caps and glasses are never allowed.
The exact specification you must meet:
- Size: 40x50 mm (472x591 px), portrait orientation
- Background: white #FFFFFF (blue only for white/sparse-haired applicants)
- Face height: the head fills roughly 54-66% of the frame (head length 27 mm)
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight ahead
- Glasses: not allowed
- Headwear: forbidden, including hats and religious head coverings
- Recency: taken within the last 6 months, reflecting your current appearance
Common reasons photos are rejected in Colombia:
- Wrong head length — too small or too large against the strict 27 mm requirement
- Using a blue background when you do not have white or sparse hair (it is only an exception, not a default)
- Shoulders turned, one shoulder cropped, or light-coloured clothing blending into the background
- Glasses, glare, hair across the eyes, or a slight smile instead of a neutral expression
For passports issued inside Colombia, the photo is now captured digitally on-site at the passport office, so a self-made or downloaded photo is generally not accepted for submission. At consulates abroad, a self-supplied photo may be accepted. Our tool automatically crops your own picture to the exact Cancillería standard, giving you a precise, compliant reference image — ideal to see how a correct photo should look, to prepare for your on-site appointment, or to use at a consulate. We are transparent about this so you arrive ready, not surprised.
