Your National ID card photo: what matters
The Kyrgyzstan national ID card (ID-karta / pasport KR) is a biometric electronic document issued by the State Registration Service (GRS). Its photo must follow the international ICAO biometric standard, with a tightly framed face on a pure white background so the chip and facial-recognition systems can read it reliably. Getting this framing right is the difference between a smooth appointment and a repeat visit.
The most important thing to understand about this document is unique to Kyrgyzstan: since the 2017 and 2025 ID-card models, your photo is captured live on-site. At a GRS service center (TSON / ЦОН) an operator photographs you and takes your fingerprints directly into the system, and the biometric image is written to the chip. You cannot bring your own printed or downloaded photo for submission — the capture is part of the secure enrollment process. This makes a self-supplied photo different here than for many other countries' documents.
The on-site capture still follows a fixed biometric framing, equivalent to:
- Size: 35x45 mm (413x531 px)
- Background: plain white, #FFFFFF
- Face height: the face fills 70-80% of the frame
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera
- Glasses: not allowed
- Headwear: forbidden (no hats or caps)
- Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance (effectively taken within 6 months)
- Common reasons photos are rejected in Kyrgyzstan:
- Wearing glasses or tinted lenses that cause glare or hide the eyes
- A non-neutral expression — smiling, open mouth, or raised eyebrows
- Hair falling across the eyes or face, breaking the 70-80% framing
- Shadows or a tinted background instead of clean #FFFFFF white
Because the GRS captures the official image digitally at the center, a downloaded or home-made photo is generally not accepted for submission.
