This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Indonesia does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.

A document photo is a headache of its own

A Indonesia Driving licence photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Driving licence photo: what matters

Getting the photo right for an Indonesian driving licence (SIM, Surat Izin Mengemudi) means matching the standard set by the National Police (POLRI), who issue the licence at SATPAS registration centres. This page explains the exact specification so you know precisely what a compliant portrait looks like and can walk into your appointment fully prepared.

There is one peculiarity that makes the Indonesian SIM unlike most documents: the portrait, signature and fingerprints are captured live on-site at the SATPAS. The officer photographs you against a coloured backdrop during registration, so a photo you took yourself is not pasted onto the card. Indonesia also follows a distinctive colour convention tied to your year of birth, the photo background is red for even birth years and blue for odd birth years, which the SATPAS system selects automatically. The official digital template uses a #0033A0 blue reference and a 30x40 mm frame.

  • Size: 30x40 mm (354x472 px at print resolution).
  • Background: solid #0033A0 blue (red/blue convention applied by birth-year parity).
  • Face height: the head fills 50-65% of the frame.
  • Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed, looking straight at the camera.
  • Glasses: allowed only if your eyes are fully visible, with no glare and no tinted lenses.
  • Headwear: not permitted, except for genuine religious head covering that leaves the full face visible.
  • Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance, taken within the last 6 months.
  • Common reasons photos are rejected in Indonesia:
  • Submitting a self-made or downloaded photo when the SATPAS requires a live on-site capture for the SIM.
  • Wrong background colour, ignoring the red/blue birth-year rule or using a busy, non-uniform backdrop.
  • Smiling, open mouth, tilted head or hair covering the eyes or eyebrows.
  • Glare on glasses or tinted lenses hiding the eyes, and non-religious hats or caps.

Because the SIM portrait is taken digitally at the office, a downloaded or self-supplied photo is generally not accepted for submission and we make no acceptance promise for this document. What our tool does is automatically crop and format your own picture to the exact official 30x40 mm standard, giving you a perfectly compliant reference image. Use it to see exactly how your SATPAS portrait must look, fix grooming and framing before you arrive, or keep a standard-sized copy for other paperwork. Honest preparation, not a false guarantee, is the real advantage here.

Common questions about Indonesia Driving licence photos

Can I use a self-made photo for my Indonesian SIM?
Generally no. The SIM portrait, signature and fingerprints are captured live at the SATPAS during registration, so a downloaded or self-taken photo is not used on the card. Use a compliant reference image only to prepare.
What size must an Indonesian SIM photo be?
The official format is 30x40 mm (about 354x472 px at print resolution), with the head filling roughly 50-65% of the frame height.
Why is the background sometimes red and sometimes blue?
Indonesia uses a birth-year colour convention: the photo background is red for people born in even years and blue for odd years. The SATPAS system applies this automatically.
Can I wear glasses in the photo?
Yes, but only if your eyes are fully visible with no glare and no tinted lenses. If there is any reflection or shading over the eyes, the photo will be rejected.
Is headwear allowed?
Only genuine religious head covering is permitted, and it must leave your full face clearly visible. Caps, hats and fashion accessories are not allowed.
What expression should I have?
Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and eyes open, looking straight at the camera. Smiling or an open mouth is not accepted.
