- Face coverage: face must fill 70–80% of the frame height; eyes looking directly at the camera
- Expression: neutral and relaxed; mouth closed
- Eyes: fully open and clearly visible
- Glasses: permitted only if eyes are fully visible — no reflective glare, no tinted or coloured lenses
- Headwear: not permitted except for religious or medical reasons; must not cast a shadow on the face
- Recency: must represent your current appearance — taken within the past 6 months
Common reasons photos are rejected in New Zealand:
- Shadows falling across the face or background from uneven or off-axis lighting
- Glasses with reflective glare or tinted lenses that partially obscure the eyes
- Head covering without a religious or medical basis
- Non-neutral expression — teeth visible, an exaggerated pose, or eyes not directed straight at the lens
