Getting the photo right for a Kenya driving licence means matching the national biometric standard enforced by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). The smart driving licence uses a strict white-background facial image, captured to the same specification used across Kenyan biometric documents. Understanding exactly what a compliant image looks like saves time, avoids confusion at the office, and lets you arrive fully prepared.
Here is the most important peculiarity to understand: the NTSA smart driving licence does not accept a self-supplied photo. When you apply, you attend a Huduma Centre or NTSA enrolment point where your facial image, fingerprints and digital signature are all captured live, on-site. This live biometric enrolment is mandatory precisely because the photo, prints and signature must be cryptographically tied to the smart card chip. A downloaded or home-printed photo simply cannot be submitted into that system. Knowing this in advance is the single biggest way to avoid a wasted trip.
The national biometric facial standard for the licence follows these exact requirements:

- Background: plain pure white (#FFFFFF), evenly lit, no shadows
- Face height: the face fills 55-78% of the frame
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera
- Glasses: not allowed
- Headwear: none, except for genuine religious purposes (face fully visible)
- Recency: a current likeness, taken within the last 6 months
- Common reasons photos are rejected in Kenya:
- A coloured, grey or patterned background instead of pure white, often from a home wall
- Glasses, tinted lenses or heavy glare hiding the eyes
- Smiling, an open mouth or a tilted head breaking the neutral, front-facing pose
- Shadows on the face or background caused by poor indoor lighting
