This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Tanzania does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. A document photo is a headache of its own

A Tanzania Driving licence photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Driving licence photo: what matters

Getting your Tanzania driving licence right starts with understanding the exact photo standard set by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) — the body that administers driving licences in partnership with the National Identification Technology (NIT) infrastructure. A correctly prepared, fully standard-compliant image means you arrive at the issuing centre knowing exactly what to expect at every step of the process.

Tanzania's driving licence has a distinctive feature: rather than submitting a photo in advance, the applicant's photo is captured live via webcam directly at TRA or NIT service centres at the time of application. The required dimensions — 35×45 mm — mirror the national biometric identity standard applied across all Tanzanian official documents, ensuring full interoperability with the NIT system. This means the framing, background, and face coverage rules are the same strict biometric requirements used for the national ID card.

  • Size: 35×45 mm (413×531 px at 300 dpi)
  • Background: plain white (#FFFFFF) — no shadows, gradients, or patterns
  • Face coverage: 70–80% of total frame height
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open and clearly visible
  • Glasses: permitted only when eyes are completely unobstructed — no glare, no reflective coatings, no tinted lenses
  • Headwear: not permitted except for documented religious reasons; must not obscure any facial feature or the hairline
  • Recency: taken within the last 6 months of application date

Common reasons photos are rejected in Tanzania:

  • Shadow on the white background — biometric capture stations at TRA centres are calibrated for clean, shadowless white; even subtle grey tones trigger an automated rejection
  • Glasses with reflective or tinted lenses — TRA officers will ask applicants to remove them before capture if any glare is visible in the frame
  • Head not centred or slightly tilted — NIT biometric software requires strict frontal alignment and small deviations fail automated checks at the centre
  • Clothing with prominent logos, graphics, or a colour close to skin tone — plain, professional attire is the expected standard for all Tanzanian national identity documents

Our tool automatically crops and frames your uploaded photo to the exact 35×45 mm / 413×531 px specification with a clean white background — perfectly matching the TRA standard. Because TRA captures the actual licence photo on-site digitally, a correctly prepared reference image serves a real practical purpose: you see precisely what a properly framed, right-sized compliant photo must look like before your appointment, so you walk in fully prepared. The same image is immediately ready to use for visa applications, work permits, or any other Tanzanian or international document that accepts submitted photos. Common questions about Tanzania Driving licence photos

What are the official photo dimensions for a Tanzania driving licence?
The required size is 35×45 mm (413×531 px at 300 dpi) with a plain white (#FFFFFF) background. These are the same biometric dimensions used across all Tanzanian national identity documents, including the NIT-issued national ID card.
Does TRA accept a photo I bring or upload myself for the driving licence?
No. Tanzania's TRA and NIT service centres capture your photo live via webcam on-site at the time of your application appointment. You do not submit a printed or digital photo in advance for the driving licence itself — the image is taken directly at the centre.
If the photo is taken at the TRA office, why would I need a reference image?
A properly prepared reference image lets you see exactly what a compliant photo must look like before your appointment — correct framing, white background, neutral expression, face filling 70–80% of the frame. Arriving prepared saves time. The same image is also instantly usable for visa applications, work permit applications, or any other document that does accept submitted photos.
Are glasses allowed in a Tanzania driving licence photo?
Glasses are permitted provided both eyes are completely visible with no glare, no reflective coatings, and no tinted lenses. If glare is detected during the live capture at the TRA centre, the officer will ask you to remove your glasses before the shot is taken.
Can I wear a hat or head covering in the photo?
Headwear is permitted only for documented religious reasons. Even when worn for religious purposes, it must not obscure the face, hairline, or any facial features — full facial visibility is required by the TRA biometric standard.
How recent does the photo need to be for the Tanzania driving licence?
The photo must reflect your current appearance and be taken within the last 6 months of your application date. This applies both to the on-site capture at TRA and to any supplementary photo used for other documents.
