Long before any passport existed, two of humanity's ancestors left their footprints in wet volcanic ash at Laetoli in northern Tanzania. Roughly 3.6 million years later, those tracks survive as the oldest known footprints of upright-walking human relatives on Earth, pressed by Australopithecus afarensis as they strolled across a cooling ash plain. In a very real sense, Tanzania holds the planet's earliest evidence of two people travelling together on foot, a fitting origin for a country whose modern travel document, the East African ePassport, now carries a microchip storing each holder's biometric identity.

• Passport power As of 2025-2026 the Tanzanian passport ranks 67th on the Henley Passport Index, opening 68 destinations to its holders without a prior visa.
• ePassport Tanzania switched to the East African Community biometric ePassport in January 2018, and President John Magufuli was personally the very first citizen issued one, at the launch in Dar es Salaam.
• Naming The country's name is a portmanteau: "Tan" from Tanganyika plus "Zan" from Zanzibar, fused when the two states united on 26 April 1964 to form the United Republic.
• Citizenship Under the 1964 Articles of Union, citizenship and immigration were locked in as one of just eleven "union matters" handled centrally, so a single Tanzanian nationality binds the mainland and the semi-autonomous Zanzibar islands together.
• Currency The Tanzanian shilling subdivides into 100 senti (Swahili for cents) and is written in a quirky British-style x/y notation, where 100 shillings appears as "100/-" and 50 cents as "-/50".
• Banknotes Tanzania's money tells its story by denomination: lower-value notes bear historic political leaders while higher-value notes showcase the country's native wildlife.
• Lake record Lake Tanganyika, lining Tanzania's western edge, is the world's longest freshwater lake, the second-deepest at about 1,436 metres, and holds an estimated 17% of all surface freshwater on Earth.
• Mountain record Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres, is Africa's highest point and the tallest free-standing mountain on land, rising some 4,600 metres straight out of the surrounding plain.
