Your National ID card photo: what matters
The photo on India's Aadhaar card is governed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which sets one of the world's most rigorous identity-capture standards. Because Aadhaar links your photograph to biometrics (fingerprints and iris scans), the image must be clean, frontal, evenly lit and dimensionally exact. The reference format is a passport-style portrait of 35x45 mm (413x531 px) on a pure white background.
India's defining peculiarity: for new enrolment, Aadhaar does not accept a photo you bring yourself. Your picture is taken live by a webcam at the official enrolment or update centre, where an operator captures it alongside your biometrics. This on-site digital capture is what makes Aadhaar so secure — and why a downloaded or self-made photo is generally not accepted for enrolment. Only for certain online photo-update requests is a prepared file referenced: a 3.5x4.5 cm JPEG under 50 KB on a white background.
