A document photo is a headache of its own

A India Visa photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

      It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

      Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

      Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

      Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

«PhotoID24 does it all for you: upload an ordinary photo — get a ready file exactly matching the official requirements.»

      In detail

      Your Visa photo: what matters

An India visa photo follows a square 2x2 inch (51x51 mm / 602x602 px) standard set by the Bureau of Immigration and the Indian visa and e-Visa portals. Get this format right and your application moves forward without a resubmission request — get it wrong and the portal rejects the upload before an officer ever sees it. We prepare a photo built precisely to that specification, so it is accepted the first time.

The peculiarity that trips up most applicants is the square shape. Unlike the familiar 35x45 mm passport portrait, the Indian visa borrows the US-style square format: equal width and height, with the head measuring roughly 25-35 mm and filling 49-69% of the frame height. The background must be plain white (#FFFFFF) with no borders, shadows or gradients. As of December 2025 an ICAO-compliant photo is also mandatory, so framing, sharpness and lighting must meet international machine-readable norms — not just look nice to the eye.

      • Size: 51x51 mm square (602x602 px), full front face
      • Background: plain white #FFFFFF, no shadows or borders
      • Head height: 25-35 mm, face fills 49-69% of the frame
      • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open
      • Glasses: not allowed
      • Headwear: religious head coverings allowed only if the full face stays visible
      • File: JPEG, 10-300 KB (e-Visa portal accepts up to ~1 MB); taken within the last 6 months
      • Common reasons photos are rejected in India:
      • Using a rectangular 35x45 passport photo instead of the required square — the single most frequent error
      • An off-white, cream or grey background, or visible shadows behind the head
      • Head too small or too large in the frame, breaking the 25-35 mm rule
      • Glasses, a smile with visible teeth, or a head covering that hides part of the face or hairline

You do not need a studio. Upload a normal, well-lit photo and it is automatically cropped and prepared to the exact India visa standard — correct square dimensions, true white background and proper head size. You see a free watermarked preview before paying anything, so you check the result risk-free. Every photo carries our acceptance guarantee: if it is ever rejected, we redo it free or refund you. You pay only for the final file, and only once it fits.

      How we get it right

How we make your Visa photo meet the official standard — India, 51 × 51 mm

Every photo is prepared against the official requirements for your document — not a generic template. Here is what that means in practice:

      • 1We crop and size your photo to the exact millimetre and pixel dimensions the authority requires.
      • 2We check the background, head position, gaze and lighting, and flag glasses or head coverings that are not allowed.
      • 3We match the rules to the specific document and country, citing the official source of those requirements.
      • 4If anything does not meet the standard, you get a free re-do or your money back.

      No more doubts

A digital photo is normal, and it gets accepted — India, 51 × 51 mm

You do not need a trip to a studio. Authorities accept any Visa photo that meets the official requirements — what matters is the standard, not where the photo was made. We match that standard exactly.

      The standard is what counts

Officials check your photo against the rules — size, background, head position and lighting — not where you took it.

      Part of official processes

Many passport, visa and ID services let you upload a digital photo or submit a print — both are fine when they meet the spec.

      Same result as a studio

We prepare your file to the exact official measurements, so it is accepted just like a professional studio photo.

      And you are covered

If a photo is ever rejected for not meeting the requirements, we redo it for free or refund you.

Common questions about India Visa photos

What size is an India visa photo?
It must be a square 2x2 inch photo — 51x51 mm (602x602 px) — with equal width and height. This square format is different from the rectangular 35x45 mm passport photo, which is the most common mistake.
      What background colour is required?
A plain, solid white background (#FFFFFF) with no borders, shadows or patterns. Off-white, cream or grey backgrounds are rejected, so the photo must have a clean, evenly lit white backdrop.
Can I wear glasses or a head covering?
Glasses are not allowed for India visa photos. Religious head coverings are permitted only if your full face — from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead — remains clearly visible.
Does the same photo work for the e-Visa portal?
Yes. The e-Visa portal uses the same square 51x51 mm format; it accepts JPEG files up to about 1 MB, while standard visa uploads expect roughly 10-300 KB. We prepare the file to meet both.
What is the ICAO requirement from December 2025?
Since December 2025 the photo must also be ICAO-compliant, meaning correct framing, sharpness, lighting and a neutral expression that meet international machine-readable standards — not just a casual snapshot.
When do I pay, and what if the photo is rejected?
You see a free watermarked preview first and pay only for the final file. Thanks to our acceptance guarantee, if the photo is ever rejected we redo it free or refund you.
