Your National ID card photo: what matters
The Honduran Tarjeta de Identidad (national ID card) is issued by the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RNP), the authority that maintains the country's civil registry and biometric database. For the new biometric DNI, the photo is held to strict identity standards: a plain white background, a neutral expression, and a face sized for reliable facial recognition. Knowing exactly what a compliant image looks like helps you prepare confidently for your enrollment appointment.
Here is the most important detail that sets Honduras apart: with the rollout of the new biometric national ID, your photo is captured live on-site by the RNP during enrollment. A camera at the registration center takes the image directly, so a photo you bring from home is generally not accepted for the DNI. The RNP has not published a separate self-supply photo standard the way passport offices in many countries do, which is why the general biometric norms below describe how your captured image must look rather than what you may upload.
The technical specification for a compliant ID photo is:
- Size: 50x50 mm (591x591 px), a square format
- Background: pure white, #FFFFFF, with no shadows or texture
- Face size: the head must fill 50-70% of the frame height
- Expression: neutral, with the mouth closed and eyes open
- Glasses: not allowed
- Headwear: forbidden, including hats and caps
- Recency: the image should reflect your current appearance, taken within the last 6 months
Common reasons photos are rejected in Honduras:
- Bringing a self-made or printed photo for the DNI, when the RNP requires the image to be captured on-site at enrollment
- Wearing glasses or tinted lenses that obscure or reflect across the eyes
- A background that is off-white, grey, or shadowed instead of pure #FFFFFF
- A smiling or open-mouth expression, or a head turned away from the camera
