That sailor's relief stuck: the country's very name, Honduras, means "depths" in Spanish, a nod to the deep coastal waters that nearly wrecked his ships. The same coast later inspired another label that travelled the world. A fugitive American writer named O. Henry hid in the port of Trujillo in 1896, and from that exile he coined the phrase "banana republic" - a term born of Honduras that is still flung at nations everywhere today.
