Your National ID card photo: what matters
The Belarusian national ID-card (identity card) uses the same strict facial-image standard as the biometric passport, set by the Department of Citizenship and Migration (DCM) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A compliant photo means a frontal, sharply focused portrait on a clean white background that matches the unified 40x50 mm template used across all Belarusian biometric documents.
Important country-specific point: Belarus introduced the biometric ID-card in 2021 together with the biometric passport, replacing the old paper passport system. Because these are biometric documents, the facial image is normally captured digitally on-site at the citizenship & migration department (or by a certified photographer who uploads it securely). The unified standard expects the face to measure roughly 32-35 mm from chin to crown inside the 40x50 frame, on a light or white background, with no headwear and no tinted glasses. A self-made photo downloaded from home is generally not accepted for the actual submission.

- Background: plain white, #FFFFFF, evenly lit with no shadows
- Face size: the head fills 64-70% of the frame height (about 32-35 mm)
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight at the camera
- Glasses: allowed only if the eyes are fully visible — no glare, no tint
- Headwear: forbidden (no hats, caps or hoods)
- Freshness: taken within the last 6 months and resembling your current appearance
Common reasons photos are rejected in Belarus:
- Wearing tinted, photochromic or thick-framed glasses that obscure the eyes
- A grey, cream or coloured backdrop instead of true white as the template requires
- Submitting a home-made or phone photo instead of the mandatory on-site biometric capture
- Head too small or tilted, so the face falls outside the 32-35 mm zone
