This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Belarus does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. A document photo is a headache of its own

A Belarus Driving licence photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Driving licence photo: what matters

A Belarusian driving licence carries a facial image that must follow the national 35x45 mm document-photo norm used across official identity documents. The licence itself is issued by the GAI (State Automobile Inspectorate) through its registration-examination departments, and the photo printed on the card must show a clean, neutral, fully identifiable face on a plain light background. Knowing the exact standard before your appointment saves time and avoids surprises at the counter.

There is one crucial peculiarity that sets the driving licence apart from a passport or visa photo: for Belarusian driving licences the facial image is normally captured digitally on-site, at the registration-examination department, at the moment the licence is produced. Because the photograph is taken into the secure system directly, a self-made or downloaded photo is generally not accepted for submission. This is a deliberate anti-fraud measure tying the biometric image to the verified applicant, so you should not expect to hand over your own printed picture for the card.

The general facial-image requirements you will be measured against are:

  • Size: 35x45 mm (about 413x531 px digitally)
  • Background: plain white, #FFFFFF, evenly lit with no shadows
  • Face size: the face fills roughly 70-78% of the frame height
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight ahead
  • Glasses: allowed only if the eyes are fully visible, with no glare and no tinted lenses
  • Headwear: not permitted (religious exemptions assessed separately)
  • Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance, taken within the last 6 months

Common reasons photos are rejected in Belarus:

  • Submitting a self-made or downloaded photo when on-site digital capture is mandatory for the licence
  • A grey, cream or coloured backdrop instead of pure white, or visible shadows behind the head
  • Smiling, an open mouth, or a tilted head that breaks the neutral straight-on pose
  • Glasses causing reflections, or tinted lenses that obscure the eyes

You can use our tool to automatically crop your own picture to the exact 35x45 mm standard, with a white background and the correct face proportions. Be transparent with yourself about its purpose here: because GAI captures the licence image on-site, this is not a photo you submit for the card. Instead, treat it as a precise reference so you arrive groomed and dressed correctly, see exactly how a compliant image looks, and reuse the result for other documents or your own records. Honesty about the on-site rule is the best preparation you can have.
