Everything you need to know about the biometric photo standard for the Liechtenstein Identitätskarte — including why on-site digital capture means no printed photo required.

Important — please read first

This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Liechtenstein does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.

A document photo is a headache of its own

A Liechtenstein National ID card photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your National ID card photo: what matters

Getting your biometric photo right for the Liechtenstein Identitätskarte (national ID card) means meeting the ICAO facial-image standard as enforced by the Ausländer- und Passamt — the Principality's Office for Foreign Nationals and Passports, which issues all national identity documents. The same specification governs both the ID card and the Liechtenstein passport: a 35 × 45 mm frame, uniform light-grey background, neutral expression, and no eyeglasses.

The most important practical detail that sets this document apart from those of most other countries: according to the official llv.li government portal, the biometric facial image for the Identitätskarte is captured digitally on-site at the Ausländer- und Passamt office during your in-person appointment. You are not required — and not permitted — to bring a printed or downloaded passport photo. The office records the image directly using its own certified equipment, ensuring full compliance with ICAO biometric standards from the point of capture.

  • Photo dimensions: 35 × 45 mm (827 × 1063 px at 600 dpi)
  • Background: uniform light grey (#E6E6E6); no patterns, gradients, or shadows
  • Face coverage: the face must fill 71–80% of the total frame height
  • Expression: neutral and natural; mouth closed, eyes fully open, looking directly at the camera
  • Glasses: not permitted — remove all eyewear, including prescription glasses and sunglasses
  • Headwear: not permitted except for documented religious or medical reasons; the full head must be visible
  • Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance, taken within the last 6 months
  • Lighting: even and shadow-free across both the face and the background

Common reasons photos are rejected in Liechtenstein:

  • Attempting to submit a printed or self-made photograph — the Ausländer- und Passamt photographs applicants on-site and does not accept externally supplied images for the Identitätskarte
  • Head tilted, rotated, or not properly centred in the frame, violating the ICAO face-alignment requirement
  • Eyeglasses visible in the image, including thin-framed or near-invisible prescription lenses
  • Background colour deviating from the required light grey — white walls, cream, or beige tones are frequently flagged as non-compliant

Because the Ausländer- und Passamt captures your biometric image directly at the counter, you cannot submit a self-prepared or printed photo for the Liechtenstein Identitätskarte. Our tool works well as a preparation resource: use it to see precisely how a fully standard-compliant biometric photo must look, verify that your appearance meets every requirement — correct expression, no glasses, no headwear — and arrive at your appointment confident and ready. The same 35 × 45 mm ICAO standard also applies to the Liechtenstein passport and other travel documents where you may need to supply your own photograph independently.

Common questions about Liechtenstein National ID card photos

Do I need to bring a passport photo to my Liechtenstein ID card appointment?
No. According to the official llv.li portal, the Ausländer- und Passamt captures the biometric facial image digitally on-site during your in-person visit. You are not required — and cannot — submit a printed or self-made photograph for the Identitätskarte.
What background colour is required for a Liechtenstein ID card photo?
The required background is a uniform light grey with the hex value #E6E6E6. White, cream, or beige backgrounds do not meet the specification and would result in a non-compliant image.
Can I wear glasses in my Liechtenstein Identitätskarte photo?
No. Eyeglasses of any kind — including thin-framed prescription glasses and sunglasses — are not permitted. All eyewear must be removed before the photo is taken.
What are the exact dimensions for the Liechtenstein ID card photo?
The photo must measure 35 × 45 mm, which corresponds to 827 × 1063 pixels at 600 dpi. This is the standard ICAO biometric format also used for the Liechtenstein passport.
Can I use a self-made photo for the Liechtenstein ID card if it meets all the specifications?
No. For the Identitätskarte, the Ausländer- und Passamt takes the biometric photo itself using certified on-site equipment. Self-prepared or downloaded photos cannot be submitted for this document regardless of their technical quality.
How much of the frame should my face fill in the photo?
Your face — measured from the chin to the top of the head — must fill between 71% and 80% of the total frame height. This is a strict ICAO biometric requirement applied equally to the Liechtenstein ID card and passport.
