Your National ID card photo: what matters
The photo for an Ecuador cedula de identidad (National ID card) follows the unified biometric standard set by the Direccion General de Registro Civil, Identificacion y Cedulacion. It is the same specification used for the Ecuadorian passport: a square 50x50 mm image (600x600 px) on a pure white background, with the head occupying roughly two-thirds of the frame. Getting this exactly right matters because the same biometric portrait appears on both your identity card and travel documents.
The most important peculiarity to understand: for the cedula, the photo is captured on-site at the Registro Civil agency during your appointment. Ecuador moved to a centralized digital enrolment system, so the applicant does not hand over a printed photo or upload a self-made file at submission. The Registro Civil operator takes your portrait with their own calibrated equipment, ensuring lighting, distance and resolution match the national biometric template. This is why a downloaded or home-made photo is generally not accepted for the actual ID application.
The official portrait must meet these requirements:
- Size: 50x50 mm square (600x600 px)
- Background: plain pure white (#FFFFFF), evenly lit, no shadows
- Face size: the head fills about 62-74% of the frame height (~68% target)
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible
- Glasses: not allowed
- Headwear: none, except permanently worn religious head covering that leaves the full face visible
- Recency: a current likeness, taken within the last 6 months
Common reasons photos are rejected in Ecuador:
- Ears or part of the face hidden by hair, a cap or a hood, the Registro Civil requires both ears and the full facial outline visible
- Glasses worn during capture, causing glare or obscuring the eyes
- A non-neutral expression, a smile, open mouth or raised eyebrows breaks the biometric match
- Off-white, grey or coloured backdrop instead of the mandatory pure white
