This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Ecuador does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.

In detail

Your Passport photo: what matters

An Ecuadorian passport photo must meet a single, unified biometric standard set by the Direccion General de Registro Civil, Identificacion y Cedulacion. The format is precise: a square 50x50 mm image (600x600 px) on a plain white background, with the head occupying roughly 68% of the frame height. Getting these proportions right is the difference between a clean record and a delayed appointment.

Here is the key peculiarity that surprises most applicants: for the passport, you do not bring your own printed photo. Ecuador captures the image live, on-site at the Registro Civil agency, in the same session where your fingerprints and signature are recorded. This unified biometric enrollment links the photo directly to your identity record, which is why a self-made or downloaded photo is generally not accepted for submission. Your face and both ears must be 100% uncovered during capture.

  • Size: 50x50 mm square (600x600 px)
  • Background: plain pure white (#FFFFFF), no shadows
  • Face height: face fills 62-74% of the frame (target ~68%)
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking forward
  • Glasses: not allowed
  • Headwear: none, except permanently worn religious head covering that leaves the full face visible
  • Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance (within the last 6 months)
  • Common reasons photos are rejected in Ecuador:
  • Ears or part of the face covered by hair, scarves or accessories during on-site capture
  • Wearing glasses, tinted lenses or heavy frames that obscure the eyes
  • A background that is off-white, grey or shadowed instead of pure white
  • A non-neutral expression: smiling, open mouth, or tilted head breaking the ~68% head ratio

Because the official passport image is taken digitally at the office, the smartest move is to arrive fully prepared. Our tool automatically crops your own picture to the exact 50x50 mm Registro Civil standard, giving you a perfectly compliant reference image. Use it to see precisely how your hair, clothing and posture should look before your biometric appointment, so capture goes right the first time. We are transparent: this reference photo is for preparation and personal use, not for direct submission, because the passport requires mandatory on-site capture.

Common questions about Ecuador Passport photos

What size is an Ecuador passport photo?
The Ecuadorian passport photo is a square 50x50 mm image (600x600 px) on a pure white background, with the head filling about 68% of the frame, following the unified Registro Civil biometric standard.
Can I submit my own photo for an Ecuador passport?
No. For the passport, the Registro Civil captures your photo live on-site during the same session as your fingerprints and signature, so a self-made or downloaded photo is generally not accepted for submission.
Are glasses allowed in an Ecuador passport photo?
No. Glasses are not permitted. Your eyes must be fully visible, open and looking straight at the camera, with no tinted lenses or frames obscuring them.
Do my ears need to be visible?
Yes. Ecuador's biometric standard requires your face and both ears to be 100% uncovered, so keep hair, scarves and accessories clear during the on-site capture.
What background is required?
A plain, pure white background (#FFFFFF) with no shadows, patterns or off-white tones. Anything grey or shaded is a common cause of problems.
Can I smile in the photo?
No. The expression must be neutral with your mouth closed, eyes open and head straight, keeping the required head-to-frame proportion.
