A document photo is a headache of its own

A Kosovo National ID card photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

      It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

      Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

      Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

      Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

«PhotoID24 does it all for you: upload an ordinary photo — get a ready file exactly matching the official requirements.»

      In detail

Your National ID card photo: what matters

A compliant photo for the Kosovo national ID card (Leternjoftim) means one thing above all: it must be accepted on first submission at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MPB). The photo standard follows the ICAO biometric specification — the same international framework used for Kosovo passports — requiring a precise 35×45 mm print, a white or near-white background, and a neutral biometric expression. Getting every detail right before you visit the issuance center saves you a return trip and avoids delays in receiving your document.

One practical reality Kosovo applicants should know: the MPB issuance centers typically capture the applicant's photo on-site using their own camera equipment. However, a self-supplied compliant photo is accepted, and many applicants — especially those renewing from abroad or preparing well in advance — choose to bring their own. Because the Kosovo ID shares the exact same ICAO photo standard as the Kosovo passport, any photo prepared correctly for one document will meet the requirements of the other. This dual validity makes it especially worthwhile to prepare the photo carefully rather than relying on a rushed in-center capture.

      • Size: 35 × 45 mm (digital equivalent: 413 × 531 px at 300 dpi)
      • Background: plain white (#FFFFFF) or very light — no patterns, shadows, or gradients
      • Face coverage: the head must fill 70–80% of the frame height, measured from chin to crown
      • Expression: neutral and relaxed — mouth closed, no smiling, no raised eyebrows
      • Eyes: fully open, clearly visible, looking directly at the camera
      • Glasses: permitted only if the eyes are completely unobscured — no tinted lenses, no glare, no thick frames that cut across the eyes
      • Headwear: not permitted except for documented religious reasons; head coverings must not cast shadows on the face
      • Recency: photo must have been taken within the past 6 months and reflect your current appearance
      • Print quality: sharp focus, true-to-life colour, no digital alterations to facial features
      • Common reasons Kosovo ID photos are rejected:
      • Background too dark or off-white: any cream, grey, or coloured background fails the white-background requirement; even slight shadows behind the head are flagged
      • Head position too small or too large: a face filling less than 70% or more than 80% of frame height is non-compliant under the ICAO biometric standard Kosovo uses
      • Glasses with tinted or reflective lenses: standard prescription glasses are borderline-accepted only when both eyes are entirely visible; any hint of tint or glare causes rejection
      • Photo older than 6 months or appearance mismatch: officers compare the photo to the applicant in person — a photo that looks noticeably dated or does not match current hair colour or facial features will be refused

To get your photo right the first time, upload a plain, well-lit selfie or portrait taken against a light wall. Our tool automatically crops it to the official 35×45 mm ICAO dimensions, corrects the background to pure white, and checks that your face fills the required 70–80% of the frame — matching the exact standard the MPB requires. You receive a free watermarked preview to review before paying anything. And if the final photo is ever rejected by the issuing authority, we will redo it at no charge or refund you in full. You pay only for the finished file you are satisfied with.

      How we get it right

How we make your National ID card photo meet the official standard — Kosovo, 35 × 45 mm

Every photo is prepared against the official requirements for your document — not a generic template. Here is what that means in practice:

      • 1We crop and size your photo to the exact millimetre and pixel dimensions the authority requires.
      • 2We check the background, head position, gaze and lighting, and flag glasses or head coverings that are not allowed.
      • 3We match the rules to the specific document and country, citing the official source of those requirements.
      • 4If anything does not meet the standard, you get a free re-do or your money back.

      No more doubts

A digital photo is normal, and it gets accepted — Kosovo, 35 × 45 mm

You do not need a trip to a studio. Authorities accept any National ID card photo that meets the official requirements — what matters is the standard, not where the photo was made. We match that standard exactly.

      The standard is what counts

Officials check your photo against the rules — size, background, head position and lighting — not where you took it.

      Part of official processes

Many passport, visa and ID services let you upload a digital photo or submit a print — both are fine when they meet the spec.

      Same result as a studio

We prepare your file to the exact official measurements, so it is accepted just like a professional studio photo.

      And you are covered

If a photo is ever rejected for not meeting the requirements, we redo it for free or refund you.

Common questions about Kosovo National ID card photos

What size does a Kosovo ID card photo need to be?
The required size is 35 × 45 mm — the same ICAO biometric standard used for Kosovo passports. In digital terms this is 413 × 531 pixels at 300 dpi. Any photo printed at a different size will be rejected at the MPB issuance center.
What background colour is required for the Kosovo Leternjoftim photo?
The background must be plain white or very light (essentially #FFFFFF). Cream, off-white, grey, or any patterned background does not meet the standard. Shadows on the background — even soft ones — are also a common reason for rejection.
Can I wear glasses in my Kosovo ID card photo?
Glasses are permitted in principle, but only if both eyes are fully visible with no tinted lenses and absolutely no glare or reflections on the lenses. In practice, glasses with any reflective coating are almost always rejected. If in doubt, remove them for the photo.
Do I have to get my photo taken at the MPB office, or can I bring my own?
MPB issuance centers can photograph you on the spot, but a self-supplied photo that meets the official standard is accepted. Many applicants — particularly those renewing from abroad — prepare their own compliant photo in advance. Because the Kosovo ID and Kosovo passport share the same ICAO photo standard, one correctly prepared photo works for both.
When do I pay, and what if my photo is rejected?
You see a free watermarked preview of your prepared photo before any payment is required. You pay only when you are happy with the result and download the final file. If the photo is rejected by the issuing authority after payment, we will either redo it free of charge or issue a full refund — whichever you prefer.
How recent does the photo need to be for the Kosovo ID card?
The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months and must accurately reflect your current appearance. A photo that looks noticeably different from how you look today — different hair colour, significant change in appearance — can be refused by the officer at the counter.
