Your National ID card photo: what matters
The photo for the Chinese Resident Identity Card (居民身份证) follows a strict national standard set by the Ministry of Public Security. It is a small, plainly lit portrait on a pure white background, designed for machine-readable verification and the embedded chip. Getting the framing, expression and background exactly right matters because the image is permanently tied to your legal identity record.
The most important thing to understand about this document is unique among photo IDs: the photo is normally captured on-site (live capture) at the local Public Security Bureau (公安局) when you register, renew or replace the card. An officer or certified station photographs you directly with calibrated equipment, or a certified studio uploads the image through a secure government channel. Because of this live-capture requirement, a downloaded or self-made photo is generally not accepted for submission. The standard image is deliberately small — about 26x32 mm, or 358x441 pixels digitally — on a plain white or light background, with no glasses and a neutral face.
The exact official requirements are:

- Face height: must fill roughly 60-75% of the frame height
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible
- Glasses: not allowed
- Headwear: forbidden (no hats, no caps; religious head coverings are handled case by case on-site)
- Recency: must reflect your current appearance, taken within the last 6 months
- Common reasons China ID photos are rejected:
- Wearing glasses or having visible lens glare or frame shadows across the eyes
- Background that is grey, blue or shadowed instead of pure even white
- Hair covering the eyebrows or partly hiding the eyes and face outline
- Smiling, open mouth, or a head tilt that breaks the neutral straight-on pose
