This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Chile does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. A document photo is a headache of its own

A Chile Passport photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Passport photo: what matters

A Chilean passport photo must follow the strict biometric format used by the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación (SRCeI), the authority that issues passports in Chile. The standard image is 45x45 mm (531x531 px) on a plain white background, with a clearly visible, frontally lit face and a neutral expression. Getting these proportions right is what separates an accepted photo from a rejected one.

Chile has an important peculiarity that most guides miss. For passports requested inside Chile, the Registro Civil performs live biometric capture on-site — your photo, signature and fingerprints are all recorded at the office during your appointment. No self-supplied or downloaded photo is accepted for a domestic application. Only consular and abroad procedures accept printed photos: typically two color prints on a white background, frontal and neutral. Size is cited variously as 4x5 cm at some consulates, but 4.5x4.5 cm (45x45 mm) is the most common requirement, so always confirm with your specific consulate.

The exact specification for a compliant image:

  • Size: 45x45 mm (531x531 px)
  • Background: plain white (#FFFFFF), no shadows
  • Face height: fills 70-80% of the frame
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open
  • Glasses: not allowed
  • Headwear: none, except permanently worn religious headwear that leaves the full face visible
  • Recency: taken within the last 6 months
  • Common reasons photos are rejected in Chile:
  • Submitting a self-made photo for a domestic application — only on-site biometric capture at the Registro Civil is valid in-country
  • Wearing glasses or tinted lenses that obscure or reflect over the eyes
  • A background that is off-white, grey or shadowed instead of pure white
  • Using the wrong print size at a consulate (4x5 cm vs 4.5x4.5 cm) without confirming local rules first

Our tool automatically crops and formats your own picture to the exact 45x45 mm white-background standard, so you can see precisely how a compliant Chilean passport photo must look. Be aware: for passports issued inside Chile, the Registro Civil captures the photo digitally at your appointment, so a downloaded image is generally not accepted for domestic submission. Use the prepared image to check requirements, get ready for your appointment, or for consular and other purposes where a printed standard photo is allowed.

Common questions about Chile Passport photos

What is the official size of a Chilean passport photo?
The standard is 45x45 mm (531x531 px) on a plain white background. Some consulates cite 4x5 cm, so confirm the exact size with your specific issuing office before printing.
Can I use a self-made photo for a passport application in Chile?
No. For applications inside Chile, the Registro Civil captures your photo, signature and fingerprints live on-site during your appointment. Self-supplied photos are only accepted for consular and abroad procedures.
Why does Chile not accept downloaded passport photos domestically?
Chilean passports use mandatory live biometric capture at the SRCeI office. The photo is taken digitally on-site to ensure identity security, so a downloaded or home-made image cannot be submitted in-country.
Can I wear glasses in a Chilean passport photo?
No. Glasses are not allowed. Remove all eyewear so your eyes are fully visible, open and free of reflections or frames.
What background color is required?
A plain pure white (#FFFFFF) background with no shadows or texture. Off-white, grey or shadowed backgrounds are a common cause of rejection.
Is headwear allowed in the photo?
Only religious headwear that is worn permanently and leaves the full face visible from chin to forehead. Hats, caps and fashion accessories are not permitted.
