Chile Driving Licence Photo: The Exact Standard Your Licencia de Conducir Requires
Learn precisely how a compliant Chilean driving licence photo must look under the national carnet standard, and prepare correctly before your municipal appointment.
This photo must be taken by an accredited service
For this document, Chile does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.
This photo is captured on site — but we can make your Chile photos online:
A document photo is a headache of its own
A Chile Driving licence photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.
It gets rejected
Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.
Expensive and slow
A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.
Confusing requirements
Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.
Redo it all over
Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.
«Below are the exact requirements from the official source, so you arrive at your appointment prepared.»
Ordinary photo → ready for submission
We remove the background and clutter, set the framing and lighting — keeping your face without «beautifying».
Your face stays yours — we do not change features, only the background, lighting and framing.
Your Driving licence photo: what matters
A Chilean Licencia de Conducir photo must follow the unified national 'foto carnet' standard used across the country's identity documents. Driving licences are issued by the Dirección de Tránsito y Transporte Público of each municipality, and the portrait must show a frontal, evenly lit face on a clean white background with a neutral, closed-mouth expression.
Here is the most important fact for Chile: the licence photo is captured live on-site at the municipal office. When you attend your application and the accompanying medical and psychotechnical exam (examen médico), the office's own equipment takes your portrait digitally. Because of this, a photo you make or download yourself is generally not accepted for submission — the municipality controls the capture to keep every Licencia de Conducir consistent with the national carnet format and to prevent tampering. This is different from many countries where you bring printed photos, so plan to be photographed at the Dirección de Tránsito itself.
The Chilean carnet standard requires:
- Size: 45x45 mm (531x531 px), square format
- Background: pure white (#FFFFFF), no shadows or texture
- Face size: the head fills roughly 70-80% of the frame height
- Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed
- Glasses: not allowed — remove all eyewear
- Headwear: none, except discreet religious head coverings
- Recency: must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
Common reasons photos are rejected in Chile:
- Wearing glasses or tinted lenses that cause glare or hide the eyes
- A background that is off-white, grey or cream instead of pure white
- Smiling or an open mouth instead of the required neutral expression
- Hair, fringe or caps covering the eyebrows or hairline
Because the Dirección de Tránsito photographs you on-site, you cannot simply upload your own image for the licence. What you can do is prepare with confidence: our tool automatically crops and formats your picture to the exact 45x45 mm carnet standard, so you see precisely how a compliant portrait should look — correct framing, white background, neutral pose. Use it to check your appearance, fix glasses or hair issues before your appointment, or to create a standard-compliant reference image for other purposes. It is an honest preparation aid, not a shortcut around the municipal capture.
