Your Residence card photo: what matters
A compliant photo for your Chile residence card must match the biometric standard used by the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación for the Cedula de Identidad para Extranjeros — the official identity document issued to foreign residents. There is no separate "residence photo" standard: the cedula for foreigners reuses the same frontal, white-background biometric specification applied to the national ID and Chilean passport.
The key fact every applicant should know: foreign residents in Chile do not submit their own photo. The Registro Civil captures your image live and on-site at the office, using the same digital biometric capture as for Chilean nationals. This means a downloaded or self-made photo is generally not accepted for submission — the staff photograph you, scan your fingerprints, and record your signature in a single appointment. Because the capture is biometric, the underlying requirements are still strict and worth understanding before you arrive, so your result is clean and rejection-free.
The biometric standard your captured image must satisfy:
- Size: 45x45 mm (531x531 px), square format
- Background: plain pure white (#FFFFFF), no shadows or texture
- Face size: head fills roughly 70-80% of the frame height
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera
- Glasses: not allowed — remove eyewear before capture
- Headwear: none, except discreet head coverings worn for religious reasons
- Recency: taken at the time of the appointment (or within the last 6 months for any reference image)
- Common reasons photos are rejected in Chile:
- Wearing glasses during capture — reflections or frames hiding the eyes cause the Registro Civil system to reject the frame
- Non-neutral expression — smiling or an open mouth breaks the biometric match against your facial template
- Hair or hands across the face — fringe over eyebrows or a covered jawline fails the facial-landmark check
- Tinted or coloured background in any self-supplied reference — only pure white is accepted, not the off-white common in home photos
