This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Brazil does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. A document photo is a headache of its own

A Brazil Residence card photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Residence card photo: what matters

The Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratorio (CRNM) is the official foreigner residence card issued by Brazil's Policia Federal. Its facial photo follows an ICAO-style portrait standard: a neutral, front-facing headshot on a pure white background, sized to 30x40 mm (354x472 px). Our tool prepares a reference image cropped to exactly this specification, so you can see precisely how a compliant CRNM portrait must look before your appointment.

The most important fact about the CRNM photo: for the modern card, the facial image is captured on-site, digitally, during your mandatory biometric appointment at the Policia Federal. Officers photograph you and collect fingerprints in one session, so a downloaded or self-made photo is generally not accepted for submission. This differs from the older legacy paper process, which used a printed 3x4 cm (30x40 mm) photograph supplied by the applicant. Knowing this in advance saves you a wasted trip and lets you arrive already looking the part.

The official portrait specification the Policia Federal applies:

  • Size: 30x40 mm (354x472 px)
  • Background: plain pure white (#FFFFFF), evenly lit, no shadows
  • Face size: head fills 70-80% of the frame height
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera
  • Glasses: not allowed — remove all eyewear
  • Headwear: none, except religious head coverings that do not obscure the face
  • Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
  • Common reasons CRNM photos are rejected in Brazil:
  • Submitting a self-made or printed photo when on-site digital capture is required — the Policia Federal will retake it
  • Wearing glasses or tinted lenses, which cause glare and hide the eyes
  • A grey, cream or off-white background instead of pure white, or visible shadows behind the head
  • Smiling, an open mouth, hair across the eyes, or a tilted head breaking the neutral ICAO pose

To use our service, upload any clear photo of yourself and it is automatically cropped and formatted to the exact 30x40 mm CRNM standard. We are honest about how this document works: because the Policia Federal now captures the facial photo on-site, a self-supplied image will usually not be accepted for the application itself. Treat your compliant reference image as preparation — confirm your framing, background and expression, groom accordingly, and walk into your biometric appointment knowing exactly what an approved CRNM portrait looks like.

Common questions about Brazil Residence card photos

What are the photo requirements for the Brazil CRNM residence card?
A 30x40 mm (354x472 px) colour portrait on a pure white background, with the head filling 70-80% of the frame, a neutral expression with mouth closed, no glasses, and no headwear except for religious coverings.
Can I use a self-made or downloaded photo for my CRNM application?
Generally no. For the modern CRNM, the Policia Federal captures your facial photo digitally on-site during your mandatory biometric appointment, so a self-supplied photo is normally not accepted for submission.
Why is the CRNM photo taken at the Policia Federal office?
The card combines your facial image with fingerprints collected in the same biometric session. Capturing the photo on-site lets the authority verify identity and link the image securely to your record.
What background colour does the Brazil residence card photo require?
A plain, pure white (#FFFFFF) background, evenly lit with no shadows. Grey, cream or coloured backgrounds are a common rejection cause.
Are glasses allowed in the CRNM photo?
No. Eyewear must be removed because lenses cause glare and can obscure the eyes, which breaks the ICAO-style portrait standard the Policia Federal uses.
What size is the CRNM residence card photo?
30x40 mm (equivalent to the classic 3x4 cm format), or 354x472 pixels digitally. The older legacy paper process used the same 3x4 cm printed photograph.
