Your Austrian residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) is issued as an ID-1 plastic card, and the photo you submit must meet a strict biometric standard. Austria does not publish a separate photo specification for residence permits: applicants supply a picture that satisfies the unified federal Passbildkriterien defined by the Ministry of the Interior (BMI) — exactly the same standard used for Austrian passports and ID cards. Getting this right the first time avoids a rejected application at the MA 35 or your district authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft).
This is the key thing most applicants miss: there is no "residence-card photo" as such. Because Austria reuses one biometric standard across all identity documents, the photo must be of true passport quality — sharp, evenly lit, with a neutral light-grey background and your head sized to a precise fraction of the frame. A photo that would pass for a tourist visa elsewhere is often too loosely cropped to meet the Austrian head-height rule, which is one of the most common reasons for rejection.
