A document photo is a headache of its own

A Rwanda Work permit photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

      It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

      Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

      Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

      Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

      In detail

Your Work permit photo: what matters

A Rwanda work permit issued by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) requires a photo that meets the national biometric passport-size standard: 35×45 mm (413×531 px) on a plain white background. Because applicants upload their photo directly through the IremboGov portal, the file must be submission-ready — correct dimensions, correct background, correct file format — before you start the application. Getting it wrong at the upload stage delays the whole process.

Rwanda uses the IremboGov digital platform for work permit applications, which means the photo check happens the moment you upload. The portal expects a recent colour passport-size image in JPG format, ideally around 200 KB. There is no in-person submission queue where an officer might overlook a minor flaw — the digital system and the reviewing officer both see exactly what you uploaded. This makes precision more important than it might be at a traditional counter: the white background is mandatory, no off-white, cream, or grey substitutes are accepted, and the image must be sharp and correctly sized from the outset.

      • Photo size: 35×45 mm — 413×531 pixels at 300 dpi
      • Background: plain white (#FFFFFF) — no gradients, shadows, or patterns
      • Face coverage: face height must fill 60–80% of the total frame height
      • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible
      • Glasses: not permitted — remove all eyewear before taking the photo
      • Head coverings: permitted only for documented religious reasons; face must remain fully visible
      • Recency: photo must be taken within the last 6 months
      • File format: JPG, approximately 200 KB as required by the IremboGov upload form
      • Common reasons Rwanda work permit photos are rejected:
      • Background is off-white, light grey, or has a visible shadow behind the head — the portal and reviewing officer require pure white (#FFFFFF)
      • Face too small or too large in the frame — less than 60% or more than 80% of frame height causes an automatic flag
      • Glasses left on — even thin frames or clear lenses are not permitted under the biometric standard
      • Photo is older than 6 months or visually inconsistent with the applicant's current appearance

Upload your photo and it is automatically prepared to the exact DGIE biometric standard — correct size, white background, and face position — ready to drop straight into IremboGov. You receive a free watermarked preview before any payment, so you can confirm it looks right first. Pay only for the final download. If your work permit application rejects the photo for any technical reason, we redo it free of charge or issue a full refund — that is our acceptance guarantee.

      How we get it right

How we make your Work permit photo meet the official standard — Rwanda, 35 × 45 mm

Every photo is prepared against the official requirements for your document — not a generic template. Here is what that means in practice:

      • 1We crop and size your photo to the exact millimetre and pixel dimensions the authority requires.
      • 2We check the background, head position, gaze and lighting, and flag glasses or head coverings that are not allowed.
      • 3We match the rules to the specific document and country, against the exact format requirements.
      • 4If anything does not meet the standard, you get a free re-do or your money back.

      No more doubts

A digital photo is normal, and it gets accepted — Rwanda, 35 × 45 mm

You do not need a trip to a studio. Authorities accept any Work permit photo that meets the official requirements — what matters is the standard, not where the photo was made. We match that standard exactly.

      The standard is what counts

Officials check your photo against the rules — size, background, head position and lighting — not where you took it.

      Part of official processes

Many passport, visa and ID services let you upload a digital photo or submit a print — both are fine when they meet the spec.

      Same result as a studio

We prepare your file to the exact official measurements, so it is accepted just like a professional studio photo.

      And you are covered

If a photo is ever rejected for not meeting the requirements, we redo it for free or refund you.

Common questions about Rwanda Work permit photos

What size does a Rwanda work permit photo need to be?
The required size is 35×45 mm, which is 413×531 pixels at 300 dpi. This is Rwanda's standard biometric passport-size format, and it must match exactly when uploading through the IremboGov portal.
Does the background have to be pure white?
Yes. The DGIE standard requires a plain white background — hex #FFFFFF. Off-white, cream, light grey, or backgrounds with shadows are not acceptable and will cause the photo to be rejected.
Can I wear glasses in my Rwanda work permit photo?
No. Glasses of any kind — including reading glasses, sunglasses, or clear-lens frames — are not permitted under Rwanda's national biometric photo standard.
How do I submit my photo for a Rwanda work permit?
Rwanda work permits are applied for through the IremboGov digital platform, managed by the DGIE. You upload your photo as a JPG file (around 200 KB) directly in the online application form. There is no separate physical submission.
Do I pay before I see the result?
No. You receive a free watermarked preview of your prepared photo before any payment. You pay only when you are satisfied with the result and ready to download the final file.
What happens if my photo is rejected by IremboGov?
If your work permit photo is rejected for any technical reason after using our service, we will redo the photo free of charge or issue a full refund. You are covered by our acceptance guarantee.
