Did you know? Rwanda
In 1994, the line printed on a single Rwandan identity card decided who lived and who died: the ID introduced under Belgian rule in the 1930s carried an ethnic label, and at roadblocks the word "Tutsi" was a death sentence. After the genocide, Rwanda did something almost no nation has done with a state document — it erased ethnicity entirely. The post-1996 card, fully electronic since 2008, lists only name, date of birth, gender and place of issue, and the national creed became Ndi Umunyarwanda, "We are all Rwandan." Few passports or ID cards anywhere carry such a deliberate political silence.
- Identity documents Rwanda is one of the only countries to have deliberately stripped ethnicity from its national ID, replacing the colonial-era "Hutu/Tutsi" label — which marked people for death in 1994 — with a card showing only name, birth date, gender and place of issue.
- Digital ID Rwanda retired the paper identity card in 2008 in favour of an electronic ID, part of a digital-government push that has since made the country a hub for biometric and e-government identity systems in East Africa.
- Open borders Since January 2018 citizens of every country on Earth can get a Rwandan visa on arrival with no prior application, and from 2023 all Africans enter visa-free — a policy Kagame framed as building an African answer to Europe's Schengen zone.
- Passport power The Rwandan passport ranks 67th on the Henley Passport Index, opening visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 66 destinations — modest globally, but Rwanda's own open-door visa regime is among the most generous on the continent.
- Currency The Rwandan franc is nominally divided into 100 centimes, yet no centime coin or note has ever circulated — the subdivision exists only on paper.
- Banknotes Rwanda's first banknotes in 1964 were not printed but improvised: officials hand-stamped and embossed leftover Rwanda-Burundi notes, and the modern 500-franc bill instead shows the Nyungwe canopy's Muregeya suspension footbridge.
- World record Rwanda has the highest share of women in any national parliament on Earth — 63.8% of the Chamber of Deputies after the 2024 election, a level no other country has ever reached.
- Plastic ban In 2008 Rwanda became one of the first nations to outlaw single-use plastic bags; smuggling them can bring fines or jail, and the policy helped make Kigali Africa's cleanest capital.
- Gorilla names Borrowing a centuries-old human naming rite called Kwita Izina, Rwanda holds an annual ceremony to officially name its newborn mountain gorillas — 438 had been named since the tradition began in 2005.
