Your Passport photo: what matters
A Uruguayan passport is issued by the DNIC (Dirección Nacional de Identificación Civil) and must meet the ICAO biometric standard — a 35×45 mm image on a plain white background, neutral expression, and no eyeglasses. Knowing every specification before your appointment means the process moves smoothly and without unnecessary return visits.
Uruguay's domestic passport process has a notable distinction worth understanding: when applying inside the country, the DNIC captures your photo and fingerprints digitally at the office during your appointment — you do not submit a printed photograph for a domestic application. Uruguayan citizens applying through a consulate abroad, however, are typically asked to provide physical prints in the standard 3.5×4.5 cm format, where the same ICAO biometric specifications apply. Either way, knowing exactly how a compliant photo must look — correct head proportion, pure white background, no glasses — gives you a clear, confident advantage walking in.

Common reasons photos are rejected in Uruguay:
- Off-white or tinted background — DNIC requires pure white (#FFFFFF); cream, light grey, or unevenly lit studio backgrounds are not accepted
- Glasses of any type — clear frames, lightly tinted lenses, and prescription glasses are all prohibited under the ICAO rules applied by DNIC
- Face too small or poorly framed — the face must occupy 70–80% of the frame height; a wide shot taken from too far away places the head too small and does not meet the standard
- Non-religious headwear — caps, hats, and fashion scarves cause immediate rejection; only documented religious coverings are permitted, provided the face remains fully visible
