Your Passport photo: what matters
Moldova's biometric passport is issued by the Agency for Public Services (ASP) and conforms to the ICAO 9303 international biometric standard. The official photo format is 35×45 mm with a pure white background and the face filling 70–80% of the frame height. A correctly formatted reference photo means you arrive at your appointment fully prepared, knowing exactly what a compliant image must look like — and you have a ready file for any future application that requires a submitted photo.
An important feature of the Moldova passport process sets it apart from many other countries: the ASP office captures your facial image digitally on-site during the appointment, together with your fingerprints and — for applicants aged 12 and over — a digital signature. You do not submit or upload a photo file yourself. This makes a well-prepared reference photo valuable in two ways: it shows you the exact standard before you sit in front of the on-site camera, and it gives you a ready compliant file for other documents — Schengen visas, Romanian passport applications, residence permits — that do require a submitted photo. - Headwear: only religious coverings are allowed, provided all facial features remain fully visible
- Clothing: sober, dark clothing is recommended — avoid white tops that blend into the background
- Currency: photo must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
Common reasons photos are rejected in Moldova:
- Background that is not pure white — grey, beige, cream or shadow-affected areas behind the subject
- Glasses of any kind, including transparent, lightly tinted or prescription frames
- Head position not straight — tilted, rotated to one side, or chin raised or lowered
- Non-neutral expression: open mouth, visible smile, frowning brow or eyes partially closed
