This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Moldova does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. A document photo is a headache of its own

A Moldova Passport photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Passport photo: what matters

Moldova's biometric passport is issued by the Agency for Public Services (ASP) and conforms to the ICAO 9303 international biometric standard. The official photo format is 35×45 mm with a pure white background and the face filling 70–80% of the frame height. A correctly formatted reference photo means you arrive at your appointment fully prepared, knowing exactly what a compliant image must look like — and you have a ready file for any future application that requires a submitted photo.

An important feature of the Moldova passport process sets it apart from many other countries: the ASP office captures your facial image digitally on-site during the appointment, together with your fingerprints and — for applicants aged 12 and over — a digital signature. You do not submit or upload a photo file yourself. This makes a well-prepared reference photo valuable in two ways: it shows you the exact standard before you sit in front of the on-site camera, and it gives you a ready compliant file for other documents — Schengen visas, Romanian passport applications, residence permits — that do require a submitted photo. Knowing the standard in advance also lets you choose your outfit and setting accordingly before the day of your appointment.

  • Size: 35×45 mm (827×1063 pixels at 600 dpi)
  • Background: pure white (#FFFFFF) — no shadows, textures or gradients permitted
  • Face height: 70–80% of the total frame height
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible, looking straight at the camera
  • Glasses: not permitted under ICAO 9303 and ASP requirements
  • Headwear: only religious coverings are allowed, provided all facial features remain fully visible
  • Clothing: sober, dark clothing is recommended — avoid white tops that blend into the background
  • Currency: photo must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)

Common reasons photos are rejected in Moldova:

  • Background that is not pure white — grey, beige, cream or shadow-affected areas behind the subject
  • Glasses of any kind, including transparent, lightly tinted or prescription frames
  • Head position not straight — tilted, rotated to one side, or chin raised or lowered
  • Non-neutral expression: open mouth, visible smile, frowning brow or eyes partially closed

Upload any clear, well-lit photo to our tool, and it is automatically cropped, resized and formatted to the exact 35×45 mm ASP-compliant standard. A free watermarked preview lets you check the framing and background before downloading the full-resolution file — so you can be confident in the result before paying. Save the file as a reference for your passport appointment and keep it ready for any visa or permit application that requires a submitted photo.

Common questions about Moldova Passport photos

What is the correct size for a Moldova passport photo?
The official size is 35×45 mm (827×1063 pixels). The background must be pure white (#FFFFFF), and the face should fill 70–80% of the frame height, in line with ICAO 9303 and the requirements of the Agency for Public Services (ASP).
Do I need to bring a photo to the ASP office for my passport appointment?
No. The Agency for Public Services photographs applicants digitally on-site, capturing a facial image, fingerprints, and — for those aged 12 and over — a digital signature. You do not submit a photo yourself. A reference photo prepared to the correct standard helps you know exactly what to expect from the on-site photographer, and is ready to use for any visa or permit application that does accept a submitted photo.
Are glasses allowed in a Moldova passport photo?
No. Glasses of any kind are not permitted — including prescription frames, transparent lenses and sunglasses. This rule follows ICAO 9303, which the ASP applies to the biometric passport.
What background colour is required for a Moldova passport photo?
The background must be pure white (#FFFFFF). Grey, beige or cream shades, and any shadows falling behind the subject, are grounds for rejection.
Is religious headwear allowed?
Religious headwear — such as a hijab or kippah — is permitted, provided it does not obscure the face, hairline or jaw. All facial features must remain fully and clearly visible.
How does the online tool help me if the passport photo is taken on-site?
Upload your photo and it is automatically cropped and formatted to the exact 35×45 mm standard. A free watermarked preview shows you the result before you download the full-resolution file. You can use the image as a reference before your ASP appointment and keep it ready for any visa or permit application that requires a submitted photo.
