A document photo is a headache of its own
A Malta Residence card photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.
It gets rejected
Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.
Expensive and slow
A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.
Confusing requirements
Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.
Redo it all over
Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

Your Residence card photo: what matters
Your Malta eResidence card and single permit are issued by Identità, Malta's national identity authority. Both documents require a biometric photograph conforming to the EU ICAO standard — and submitting the correct photo from the outset means your application is processed without delays, callbacks, or extra trips to the office.
Malta's Identità applies the full passport-grade ICAO format: 35 mm wide by 45 mm tall. This portrait-oriented frame differs from the square formats used for some other European permits and catches many applicants off guard. The background must be pure white — cream, off-white, light grey, or any patterned surface causes an immediate rejection. It is also worth knowing that when you attend the Identità office to collect your card, the authority may record fresh biometric data — including fingerprints and a live digital photograph — at that appointment. Your self-supplied application photo is still required for the printed card and your official record, so every technical requirement must be met precisely.
- Size: 35×45 mm (413×531 px at 300 dpi)
- Background: pure white (#FFFFFF) — no shadows, gradients, or patterns
- Face height: 70–80% of the total frame height, centred horizontally
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open and clearly visible
- Glasses: permitted only if both eyes are fully visible — no tinted lenses, no glare or reflections on the glass
- Headwear: not permitted except for documented religious reasons; the full head must be visible within the frame
- Recency: taken within the last 6 months and accurately reflecting your current appearance
Common reasons photos are rejected for Malta residence documents:
- Background is off-white, cream, or light grey, or has a visible shadow cast behind the head
- Face too small in the frame — failing the 70–80% face-height rule that Identità strictly checks
- Glasses with tinted lenses or reflective glare that partially obscures either eye
- Photo older than 6 months or showing a significant change in appearance since it was taken
Upload a clear, recent photo taken in good, even lighting. Your image is automatically cropped and resized to the exact 35×45 mm Identità standard and the background is corrected to pure white — you receive both a print-ready file and a digital copy. A free watermarked preview is available before any payment: review it, confirm it looks right, then pay only for the final file. If Identità or the permit office rejects your photo for technical reasons, we redo it at no charge or issue a full refund. You pay only for a photo that meets the official standard.
How we make your Residence card photo meet the official standard — Malta, 35 × 45 mm
Every photo is prepared against the official requirements for your document — not a generic template. Here is what that means in practice:
- 1We crop and size your photo to the exact millimetre and pixel dimensions the authority requires.
- 2We check the background, head position, gaze and lighting, and flag glasses or head coverings that are not allowed.
- 3We match the rules to the specific document and country, citing the official source of those requirements.
- 4If anything does not meet the standard, you get a free re-do or your money back.

A digital photo is normal, and it gets accepted — Malta, 35 × 45 mm
You do not need a trip to a studio. Authorities accept any Residence card photo that meets the official requirements — what matters is the standard, not where the photo was made. We match that standard exactly.
The standard is what counts
Officials check your photo against the rules — size, background, head position and lighting — not where you took it.
Part of official processes
Many passport, visa and ID services let you upload a digital photo or submit a print — both are fine when they meet the spec.
Same result as a studio
We prepare your file to the exact official measurements, so it is accepted just like a professional studio photo.
And you are covered
If a photo is ever rejected for not meeting the requirements, we redo it for free or refund you.
