This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Guatemala does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. A document photo is a headache of its own

A Guatemala Passport photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Passport photo: what matters

A Guatemalan passport photo must meet the technical standard set by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migracion (IGM), the authority that issues every Guatemalan passport. The required image is a 26x32 mm portrait (614x756 px) on a perfectly plain white background, with the face centred, sharp and evenly lit. Getting these measurements right is the difference between a smooth appointment and a wasted trip to the emission centre.

The most important thing to understand about Guatemala is that the photo is captured on-site at the IGM emission centre. Rather than handing over a printed photo, you sit at the IGM booth and the operator takes the digital image directly. The official template is unusually precise: the head, measured from crown to chin, must be exactly 23.5 mm, leaving roughly a 2 mm margin above the top of the head. This is why a downloaded or self-printed photo is generally not used for the application itself.

  • Size: 26x32 mm (614x756 px).
  • Background: plain solid white (#FFFFFF), no shadows or texture.
  • Head height: crown to chin 23.5 mm; face fills 70-80% of the frame.
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera.
  • Glasses: not allowed.
  • Headwear: forbidden (no hats, caps or hoods).
  • Recency: the image must reflect your current appearance, taken within the last 6 months.
  • Eyeglasses left on - the IGM standard prohibits glasses entirely, including thin or rimless frames.
  • Earrings, necklaces or scarves - all jewellery and neck accessories are strictly prohibited and a frequent cause of rejection.
  • High-neck clothing - turtlenecks and collars covering the neck are not accepted; wear an open neckline.
  • Off-white or grey background - anything other than pure white, including faint shadows behind the head, fails the check.

Because IGM now performs the capture digitally at the office, a self-supplied photo is generally not accepted for submission, and we will not promise otherwise. What our tool does is automatically crop and format your own picture to the exact IGM standard so you get a perfectly compliant reference image. Use it to see precisely how a compliant photo must look, to check your framing, clothing and background before your appointment, or for any other personal use. Arriving fully prepared is the surest way to avoid surprises at the emission centre.
