This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, Zimbabwe does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. The official specification is shown below so you know exactly what to expect at your appointment.

A document photo is a headache of its own

A Zimbabwe Driving licence photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

In detail

Your Driving licence photo: what matters

A correctly formatted passport-style photograph is a required part of the Zimbabwe driving licence application, processed by the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID). The official specification calls for a 35×45 mm portrait print on a pure white background — the same internationally recognised format used for Zimbabwe passports and entry visas.

Zimbabwe's VID licensing centres capture biometric data and a digital photograph on-site during your appointment. For the paperwork stage of your application, you are required to bring printed passport-style photos that conform to the official 35×45 mm specification. Arriving with correctly sized, properly formatted photos speeds up counter processing and avoids unnecessary delays on the day of your visit.

  • Size: 35×45 mm — digital equivalent 827×1063 px at 600 dpi
  • Background: plain white (#FFFFFF) — no shadows, patterns or colour gradients
  • Face height: your face must fill 70–82% of the total frame height
  • Expression: neutral and relaxed; mouth firmly closed
  • Glasses: not permitted — including prescription glasses with clear lenses
  • Headwear: not permitted except for verified religious reasons; the full face must remain visible from hairline to chin
  • Recency: taken within the last 6 months
  • Eyes: open, clearly visible, looking directly at the camera
  • Lighting: even and diffuse — no hard shadows on face or background

Common reasons photos are rejected at Zimbabwe VID offices:

  • Shadow cast on the white background — frequently caused by standing too close to a wall during the shoot
  • Face fills less than 70% or more than 82% of the frame height, failing the VID proportion check
  • Glasses of any type — even transparent, untinted prescription lenses are not accepted
  • Background is cream, off-white or light grey rather than true white — the VID requires pure #FFFFFF; subtle tints visible under document-scanning light are grounds for rejection

Upload your photo to receive an image cropped, sized and balanced to the precise Zimbabwe VID standard. Because the biometric photograph is captured on-site at the licensing centre, the file you prepare here works as your ideal readiness reference — you see exactly what a fully compliant image looks like before your appointment — and gives you a print-ready file for the supporting paperwork you submit, as well as for Zimbabwe passport renewals, visa applications and any other document that accepts a submitted photo. A free watermarked preview is available before you download the full-resolution file.

Common questions about Zimbabwe Driving licence photos

What size must a Zimbabwe driving licence photo be?
The photo must measure 35×45 mm in portrait orientation, which is 827×1063 pixels at 600 dpi. This is the same passport-style format required for Zimbabwe passports and most Southern African visa applications.
What background colour is required for a VID driving licence photo?
A plain, pure white background (#FFFFFF) is required. Off-white, cream, ivory or light grey backgrounds are not accepted — even shades that look white under normal room lighting may fail the VID document-scanning check.
Can I wear glasses in my Zimbabwe driving licence photo?
No. Glasses of any kind, including clear prescription lenses, are not permitted. Remove all eyewear before your photo is taken — this rule is strictly applied at VID counters.
How is the photograph taken for a Zimbabwe VID driving licence?
The VID captures your photograph and biometric data digitally on-site during your licensing appointment at the centre. For the application paperwork you submit in advance, you are required to bring printed 35×45 mm photos that meet the official standard. Preparing a correctly formatted reference image in advance means you arrive fully ready and know exactly what a compliant photo looks like.
Is religious headwear allowed in a Zimbabwe driving licence photo?
Headwear is only permitted for confirmed religious reasons. If you wear religious headwear, your entire face — from hairline to chin and from ear to ear — must remain completely unobscured and clearly visible.
How does preparing a reference photo help if the VID photographs me on-site?
A correctly prepared reference image lets you see precisely what a compliant Zimbabwe VID photo looks like — right size, white background, correct face proportion and neutral expression — so you walk into your appointment fully confident. The same print-ready file can be used for the supporting paperwork you hand in, and reused for Zimbabwe passport applications, visa submissions, or any other official document that requires a submitted photograph.
