This photo must be taken by an accredited service

For this document, El Salvador does not accept a self-prepared photo. By law it must be captured on site by an authorised service and submitted electronically, so we cannot produce a submittable file for it. In detail

Your Driving licence photo: what matters

Obtaining a licencia de conducir in El Salvador that clears every checkpoint at SERTRACEN starts with one non-negotiable detail: a photograph that meets the precise standard set by the Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT) and administered through SERTRACEN, the government's authorised licensing operator. Getting that image right means no delays on the day of your appointment, when you also sit the vision, psychological and theory examinations.

El Salvador's driving licence photo has a distinctive 26×32 mm format (614×756 px) — smaller and proportionally taller than the passport formats used in most neighbouring countries. What makes it especially strict is the background rule: the surface must be pure white (#FFFFFF), completely uniform, and entirely free of drawings, spots, shadows or gradients. Even a faint shadow cast behind the head is an immediate rejection cause. Because biometrics and the photograph are captured digitally on-site at SERTRACEN during the appointment, the image is not submitted in advance by the applicant — it is taken by the centre's equipment. Arriving with a ready reference image that matches the standard means you walk in knowing exactly how a compliant photo must look and can confirm the on-site capture meets every criterion.

  • Dimensions: 26×32 mm — 614×756 px at standard print resolution
  • Background: Uniform pure white (#FFFFFF) — no shadows, spots, patterns or colour gradients
  • Face coverage: Face must occupy 60–80% of the total frame height
  • Expression: Neutral, relaxed; mouth closed, no smile
  • Glasses: Not permitted under any circumstances
  • Headwear: Permitted only for documented religious reasons; must not obscure the face or hairline
  • Recency: Photograph taken within the last six months
  • Eyes: Both eyes fully open, clearly visible, looking directly at the camera
  • Common reasons photos are rejected at SERTRACEN:
  • Background shadow or uneven lighting — the most frequent issue; overhead lighting that casts a shadow behind the shoulders fails the uniform-background rule immediately
  • Incorrect dimensions or crop — submitting a standard passport-size (35×45 mm) image instead of the required 26×32 mm is a common mistake for applicants who have used photos from other documents
  • Glasses on the subject — corrective or tinted glasses are not permitted; the VMT standard makes no exception for prescription eyewear
  • Visible headwear without religious documentation — hats, caps or fashion scarves that are not tied to a religious requirement will not be accepted

Our tool automatically crops and sizes your photo to the exact 26×32 mm (614×756 px) VMT specification and applies a clean white background — so you have a pixel-perfect reference before you ever step into a SERTRACEN centre. You can preview the result free of charge with a watermark; download the full print-ready file only when you are satisfied. Beyond the driving licence appointment itself, the same compliant image is ready to use for any other Salvadoran or international document that does accept submitted photos — visas, ID cards, permit applications — so nothing you prepare today goes to waste.

Common questions about El Salvador Driving licence photos

What is the correct photo size for an El Salvador driving licence?
The VMT/SERTRACEN standard requires a photo of exactly 26×32 mm, which corresponds to 614×756 pixels at standard print resolution. This is a unique format — do not substitute a common 35×45 mm passport photo, as it will not pass the dimensional check.
Can I submit my own photo when applying for a licencia de conducir?
No. SERTRACEN captures the photograph and biometric data digitally on-site during your appointment, at the same session as the vision, psychological and theory tests. The applicant does not bring or upload a photo in advance. Preparing a compliant reference image beforehand lets you confirm exactly how the standard looks and ensures you arrive fully ready.
What background colour is required, and does it have to be pure white?
Yes — the background must be pure white (#FFFFFF), completely uniform, and free of any shadows, drawings, spots or gradients. Even a faint shadow behind the head is a recognised rejection cause at SERTRACEN. This is stricter than many other countries that accept off-white or light-blue backgrounds.
Are glasses allowed in the driving licence photo in El Salvador?
No. Glasses of any kind — prescription, tinted or photochromic — are not permitted under the VMT standard. You must remove eyewear entirely before the photo is taken.
Is headwear allowed in the photo?
Only for documented religious reasons. If your faith requires head covering, it is permitted provided it does not obscure the face, hairline or ears. Fashion hats, caps and scarves without religious basis are not accepted.
If the photo is taken on-site, why prepare one in advance?
Having a reference image prepared to the exact 26×32 mm VMT specification means you know in advance precisely how a compliant photo looks — correct crop, white background, no glasses, appropriate face coverage. You arrive confident rather than uncertain. The same image is also immediately reusable for visas, residence permits or any other document that does accept submitted photos, saving you a separate preparation step later.
