Norway Visa Photo: Exact UDI Standard, Done Right

A Norway visa photo must meet the facial-image standard set by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI), the authority that processes Schengen visa applications for Norway. The standard is identical to the Norwegian passport photo requirement: a frontal 35x45 mm head shot, evenly lit, with both eyes, eyebrows and ears visible and the eyes looking straight into the lens. Getting these details right is the difference between a smooth appointment and a delayed application.

There is one critical peculiarity that sets Norway apart from many other Schengen countries. For visas handled through UDI, the photo is taken for you at your appointment by the police or the foreign service mission (embassy/consulate). UDI explicitly states that you do not need to bring a photo with you. The capture is done digitally on-site to guarantee a tamper-proof, biometric-grade image linked directly to your fingerprints and application. This means a self-made or downloaded print is generally not accepted for submission, even if it is technically perfect. Knowing this in advance saves you the cost and frustration of ordering prints you cannot use.

The facial standard your on-site photo will follow:

• Size: 35x45 mm reference (827x1063 px digital).
• Background: light, plain and even (#E6E6E6 light grey).
• Face height: the face fills roughly 75-80% of the frame.
• Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the lens.
• Glasses: not allowed.
• Headwear: none, except for religious or medical reasons, and the full face must stay visible.
• Recency: the captured image must reflect your current appearance (within the last 6 months).

Common reasons photos are rejected in Norway:

• Wearing glasses, or frames and reflections hiding the eyes.
• Hair, a fringe or headwear covering the eyebrows, ears or face outline.
• A smile or open mouth instead of the required neutral expression.
• Uneven lighting, shadows on the face or a coloured, busy background.
