Hold a Norwegian passport under ultraviolet light and the document transforms: the minimalist landscapes printed across its pages erupt into a glowing aurora borealis, ribbons of fluorescent green and blue sweeping over the paper while the moon rises. Unveiled in 2020 after six years of work by Oslo studio Neue, it is one of the few passports on earth where the anti-counterfeiting layer is also a deliberate work of art. Beauty doing double duty as security is very Norwegian, and it is only the start of a country full of surprises about borders, money and identity.

• Passport design Norway's passports, redesigned by studio Neue and issued from 2020, hide a UV-only security feature: under black light the printed landscapes light up with a glowing northern-lights sky, turning a fraud safeguard into deliberate art.
• Passport power In the 2025 Henley Passport Index the Norwegian passport ranked joint 4th in the world, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 188 destinations.
• Visa-free zone Under the 1920 Svalbard Treaty, Norway's Arctic archipelago of Svalbard is effectively the only place on Earth where citizens of any nation may live and work indefinitely with no visa or residence permit.
• Citizenship Norway was the last Nordic country to permit dual citizenship, only allowing it from 1 January 2020 and triggering roughly 26,000 citizenship applications within months.
• Currency The Norwegian krone, introduced in 1875, means simply 'crown'; it was once divided into 100 ore (a name from the Latin for 'golden'), though the last ore coins were withdrawn in 2012.
• Banknotes Norway's banknote series rolled out from 2017 carries no portraits at all: the pixelated back of each note depicts the sea using the Beaufort wind scale, with the calm 50-krone note rising to a gale on the 1,000-krone note.
• Constitution Signed at Eidsvoll on 17 May 1814 and still in force, Norway's constitution is the oldest in Europe and the second-oldest functioning constitution in the world after that of the United States.
• Independence Although it kept its 1814 constitution, Norway only became a fully independent state in 1905, when a referendum dissolved its union with Sweden by a vote of over 371,000 to just 184.
• Record At 24.5 kilometres, Norway's Laerdal Tunnel, opened in 2000, is the longest road tunnel in the world, complete with blue-lit caverns designed to keep drivers alert.
