In July 2022 Vietnam rolled out a sleek navy-blue passport with chip-ready pages and national heritage scenery, and almost immediately ran into a wall: Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic suspended visas because the data page had quietly dropped the holder's place of birth, a detail Schengen border officers rely on to tell apart the country's many same-named citizens. Within weeks Vietnam's embassies were issuing separate German-language birthplace certificates as a stopgap, and the Ministry of Public Security pledged to print the field back in. It is a rare modern case of a passport redesign being rejected at the border over a single missing line.

• E-passport From March 2023 Vietnam began issuing chip-based e-passports whose embedded chip can store the holder's face photo, fingerprints, iris scan and even blood type alongside the issuer's digital signature.
• Passport power In the Henley Passport Index released in December 2024 for 2025, the Vietnamese passport climbed to 90th place, giving holders visa-free or simplified entry to roughly 50 destinations.
• Currency design In December 2003 Vietnam switched its banknotes to waterproof, tear-resistant polymer, becoming only the world's third nation to master the polymer-substrate technology behind the bills in everyday wallets.
• Currency units The dong was historically divided into 10 hao, each split into 10 xu, but decades of inflation wiped those coins out so completely that today the smallest practical note is the 1,000-dong bill.
• Citizenship Vietnam's revised Nationality Law, effective 1 July 2025, eased its long-standing single-citizenship stance by letting certain applicants keep their foreign nationality on naturalization, subject to presidential approval.
• Diaspora The United States hosts the world's largest overseas-Vietnamese community, with well over two million people of Vietnamese origin, the legacy of refugee waves that followed 1975.
• World record Son Doong in Quang Binh province, certified by Guinness World Records in 2013 as the planet's largest cave by volume at about 38.5 million cubic metres, is so vast it holds its own jungle, river and clouds.
• Population Vietnam's 2024 mid-term census counted 101.1 million people as of 1 April 2024, having crossed the 100-million mark in 2023 to become the world's 16th most populous nation.
