Two of the most familiar Nigerian words owe their existence to acts of pure invention. The country itself was christened "Nigeria" by British journalist Flora Shaw, who proposed the name in an 1897 newspaper column, stitching together the Niger River with the Latin suffix for "land" and beating out rivals like "Central Sudan" and "Niger Empire." Decades later, when independent Nigeria coined its currency in 1973, finance minister Obafemi Awolowo simply contracted the country's name into "naira." The fractional coin, the kobo, was named after copper, the metal it was struck from. From river to nation to banknote, the naming runs in a single unbroken line.

• E-passport first On 17 May 2007 Nigeria became the first country in Africa to issue an electronic biometric passport, and in 2009 the ICAO awarded it a board seat to represent the continent on global travel-document standards.
• Passport power On the 2025 Henley Passport Index the Nigerian passport sits 88th, giving holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 55 destinations, fewer than regional neighbours Ghana and The Gambia.
• Currency origin The naira was coined in 1973 by contracting the word "Nigeria," while its 1/100 unit, the kobo, takes its name from "copper" after the metal the first coins were minted in.
• Document security Nigeria's current e-passport prints its data page on tamper-resistant polycarbonate and embeds a chip storing the holder's photo, signature, all ten fingerprints and an encrypted facial template.
• Citizenship quirk Under the 1999 Constitution a foreign woman can acquire Nigerian citizenship by registration simply by marrying a Nigerian man, but a foreign man marrying a Nigerian woman gets no such right.
• Dual nationality Nigerians who are citizens by birth may legally hold two or more passports, yet those who gained citizenship by registration or naturalisation forfeit it if they take up another nationality.
• Digital identity Nigeria runs Africa's largest national digital ID programme, with the National Identification Number passing 130 million enrolments in 2026 and now required to apply for a passport.
• The name's source The name "Nigeria" honours the Niger River, and the country it labels is now Africa's most populous nation and the world's sixth-largest by population.
• Ancient record The Nok culture of central Nigeria produced some of Africa's earliest known life-sized terracotta sculptures and was independently smelting iron by around 550 BCE.
