It is a rare case where a state security document is also a deliberate showcase of national culture, carried in millions of pockets across the world's borders.

• Security tech The IC passport rolled out from March 2024 fuses the photo and chip onto a single laser-engraved polycarbonate page using banknote-grade printing - and in 2022 Japan reported zero cases of a forged passport being successfully used at its borders.

• Oldest monarchy Emperor Naruhito is counted as the 126th sovereign of the Chrysanthemum Throne, making Japan's imperial house the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy on Earth, traditionally traced back to Emperor Jimmu in 660 BC.
• Oldest business The world's oldest hotel, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, has been welcoming guests in the same family since 705 AD - and Japan was home to Kongo Gumi, a temple-building firm founded in 578 AD that operated for some 1,400 years.
