Few currencies have been hollowed out as dramatically as Venezuela's bolivar. Battered by years of hyperinflation, the central bank simply struck zeros off the banknotes three separate times: three zeros in 2008 (the "strong bolivar"), five more in 2018 (the "sovereign bolivar"), and six again in 2021, birthing the "digital bolivar." That is fourteen zeros erased in thirteen years, meaning one of today's bolivars notionally equals 100 trillion of the pre-2008 units. The redenominations were cosmetic accounting, not cures, yet they make Venezuela one of the most extreme monetary case studies on Earth.

• Currency Venezuela lopped fourteen zeros off its bolivar across three redenominations (2008, 2018 and 2021), so one digital bolivar today is worth 100 trillion of the bolivars that circulated before 2008.
• Passport Venezuela was 2025's single biggest faller on the Henley Passport Index, dropping 15 places from 30th to 45th as its visa-free access shrank to around 116 destinations.
• Diaspora By mid-2024 roughly 7.7 million Venezuelans were living abroad, about 22.5% of the population, in one of the largest displacement crises in modern history.
• Citizenship Venezuela grants nationality by jus soli, so almost anyone born on its soil is Venezuelan at birth regardless of their parents' status, with narrow exceptions for foreign diplomats' children.
• Independence On 5 July 1811 Venezuela became the first Spanish American colony to formally declare independence, voting 40 to 4 in a move heavily influenced by the U.S. Declaration of 1776.
• Name origin The country's name means "Little Venice": in 1499 Amerigo Vespucci saw indigenous stilt houses over Lake Maracaibo and likened them to the Italian lagoon city.
