In Türkiye, the colour of your passport quietly announces who you are. Most citizens carry the standard burgundy booklet, but senior civil servants, certain mayors, long-serving lawyers and academics receive a coveted "green passport" (yeşil pasaport) that unlocks visa-free travel to dozens of countries the ordinary one cannot reach. It is even cheaper, waiving the passport fee entirely. The same hierarchy runs through the booklet itself: black for diplomats, grey for service officials, green for the privileged, burgundy for everyone else. In few countries does the document in your pocket reveal your rank in society quite so literally.

• Green passport Senior civil servants, some mayors, and lawyers or academics with 15+ years of service get Türkiye's special "green passport," which grants visa-free access far beyond the ordinary burgundy one and waives the passport fee.
• Passport power The ordinary Turkish passport climbed six places to rank 46th on the Henley Passport Index 2025, giving visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 116 destinations.
• Country renamed In June 2022 the UN formally re-registered the country as "Türkiye" instead of "Turkey" at its own government's request, a rebrand now reflected on passports and official documents.
• Currency zeros Hyperinflation once made banknotes so vast that on 1 January 2005 Türkiye struck six zeros off its currency, turning 1,000,000 old lira into a single new lira.
• Lira's name The lira takes its name from the Latin libra (a pound weight), the same ancestor as the British pound and the former Italian lira, and it still divides into 100 kuruş.
• Citizenship for sale Buy property worth at least US$400,000 and hold it for three years and you can obtain Turkish citizenship and a passport in roughly 10–12 months, with no language test or residency requirement.
• Oldest temple Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Türkiye is the world's oldest known temple, raised by hunter-gatherers around 11,600 years ago—some six millennia before Stonehenge and seven before the pyramids.
• Early suffrage Turkish women won the right to vote and run for parliament on 5 December 1934, years ahead of France, Italy and Belgium.
• Two continents Istanbul is the only city on Earth that straddles two continents, split between Europe and Asia by the Bosphorus strait.
