Singapore is the only country in modern history to have become independent against its own will. On 9 August 1965, the Malaysian parliament voted 126-0 to expel the island from the federation, and a tearful Lee Kuan Yew announced the separation on live television. That reluctant birth shaped everything that followed, including one of the most disciplined identity regimes on earth: today a Singaporean can cross the border at Changi Airport in roughly ten seconds using only their face and iris, no passport in hand, even as that same passport opens more doors worldwide than any other on the planet.

• Passport power In the 2025 Henley Passport Index, Singapore reclaimed the title of world's most powerful passport, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a record 195 destinations in the Q1 ranking.
• Passport-free Since September 2024, all four Changi Airport terminals clear travellers using only facial and iris biometrics, with passport-less clearance averaging about ten seconds.
• One citizenship Singapore bans dual citizenship for adults: children may hold two nationalities but must renounce one before turning 22, and foreign citizenship never excuses a man from mandatory National Service.
• Forced birth Singapore is regarded as the only nation in modern history to gain independence unwillingly, expelled from Malaysia in 1965 by a unanimous 126-0 parliamentary vote.
• Richest banknote Singapore's S$10,000 note was the world's most valuable banknote in official circulation until its production was halted on 1 October 2014 to curb money laundering.
• Currency at par Under a 1967 interchangeability agreement, the Singapore dollar and the Brunei dollar are still accepted in each other's country at par value, like a single shared currency.
• Polymer pioneer Singapore's S$50 note of 1990 was its first polymer banknote and first commemorative note, also the first banknote ever designed in Singapore by a Singaporean artist.
• Chinese majority As of June 2024 ethnic Chinese made up about 74 percent of Singapore's 6.04 million people, alongside Malay, Indian and other communities in a deliberately multiracial society.
