Open a Russian wallet and you are holding one of the oldest pieces of money on Earth: the ruble first appears in a Novgorod chronicle of 1316, and its name comes from rubit, "to chop," because early rubles were literally chunks hacked off silver bars. In 1704 Peter the Great split it into 100 kopeks, making it the world's first decimal currency, decades before the dollar or franc copied the idea. Today only the British pound has been in continuous use longer. - Currency origin The word ruble comes from the verb rubit, "to chop," because medieval rubles were pieces literally chopped off long silver bars called grivnas.
- World first When Peter the Great divided the ruble into 100 kopeks in 1704, Russia created the world's first decimal currency, long before the US dollar adopted the same system.
- Oldest money The ruble is the second-oldest currency still in continuous use on the planet, surpassed in longevity only by the British pound sterling.
