On 1 December 2024, Qatar quietly made history in the world of travel documents: it became the first Arab country ever admitted to the United States Visa Waiver Program, letting its citizens visit America without a visa. Only Brunei had previously joined as a Muslim-majority nation. For a peninsula smaller than Connecticut that was still a British protectorate in 1971, it was a remarkable leap in passport power. Yet the same document follows one of the world's strictest identity rules: Qatari nationality passes almost entirely through the father's bloodline, and the country is famously one of the hardest places on earth to gain citizenship.

• Passport power In 2025 the Qatari passport ranked 47th on the Henley Passport Index with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 111 destinations, second-strongest in the Middle East after the UAE.
• US travel From December 2024 Qatar became the first Arab nation in the US Visa Waiver Program, so Qataris can now enter the United States without applying for a visa.
• Citizenship Qatari nationality is built almost purely on jus sanguinis through the father: a child of a Qatari father is automatically a citizen anywhere in the world, but Qatari mothers cannot automatically pass their nationality to their children.
• Currency origin The riyal owes its name to the Spanish 'real' and ultimately the Latin 'regalis' meaning 'royal' - the very same word root behind the English word 'royal'.
• Currency split Qatar only minted its own riyal on 19 May 1973, after sharing a joint 'Qatar and Dubai riyal' that dissolved when Dubai joined the new United Arab Emirates.

• Identity gap A small stateless community called the Bidoon - Arabic for 'without nationality' - numbering roughly 2,500 people, descends from tribes never formally registered as citizens at independence in 1971.
• Ancient record Archaeologists in Qatar unearthed a pearl bead dated to about 4,600 BC, considered one of the oldest known natural pearls on Earth, rooting the nation's identity in pre-oil pearl diving.
